Taking another look at metal

Sign in to disble this ad
I know there are other threads on this subject, but searching didn't help much (curse you crappy search function).

Anyway, I've been getting more and more into metal to expand my musical tastes. I've been listening to some Mudvayne, Killswitch Engage, Rob Zombie and the like, and am looking for more, whether from these same artists or some similar. I can tolerate a bit of screaming, but not a lot.

Stuff I used to listen to was just about everything. I firmly believe that there is good in all music, just more in some genres than others. Some of my favorite bands/artists are Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against the Machine, Marcus Miller, Muse, Aerosmith, Eminem, Rush, Fort Minor, Michael Jackson when he was still black, T.A.T.U., Jamiroquai, and pretty much anything Claypool has even looked at, among others that I can't think of off the top of my head. I'm also very interested in metal by bands that speak languages other than English (Pentagram was pretty good, until I kept running into songs in English).

I know we have a lot of metal guys out there, so show me the light!

Do you listen to Sabbath? That is the best place to start.

Indeed I do! Love Sabbath and Ozzy. Not digging The Sword, though. Sounds a bit... empty? Not sure what I'm trying to say, just not feeling it I guess.

I like metal. However I do not like Mudvayne or Killswitch engage. I like groovy riffage. Sleep/OM, Kyuss, Sabbath, Trouble, Candlemass, Melvins/Big Business.

Instru-metal/Post-metal stuff like Red Sparowes and Russian Circles.

Slipknot but during the Subliminal Verses Vol. 3 album. The new stuff is full of screamo so you might not like that. Bullet For My Valentine has some songs without much screaming but some songs have a lot. Cradle of Filth is just about all screaming but it's a little different. The guy screams in different tones so you might like that. Plus the instrumental aspect of that band is amazing.

Keep the suggestion coming! I'm checking out that Slipknot album. The only Slipknot song I'm familiar with is Duality, which I really like and I see it's on that Vol. 3 album. Also, I'm familiar with the band CoF, but not really the music. I'll have to check them out.

Any suggestions as far as songs or albums that are representative of their style? Just searching the band name on youtube can get you some pretty obscure stuff that doesn't really show who they are, ya know?

as annoying as myspace can be, it's usually a good way to get a good representation of a band... since they try to post their best stuff.

SOme of my favorite "metal" bands (since some disagree them being metal):

Protest the Hero
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEn8HmgJxd4
Fall of Troy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbAtMjCZtUU

I find myself to dislike most screaming in metal, but for some reason these bands might appeal to you like they did for me:

Strapping Young Lad
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LeG-6bpeUkA
Arch Enemy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9AcG0glVu4

And of course, you should always check out DETHKLOK!

I could give you a list longer than your arm; a mix of modern takes and old school metal. But, just to toss out a name for you to check out for the sake of expanding your tastes, I'd say have a look/listen at/to Evergrey. They are quite interesting, and quite good too.

Sleep
Electric wizard
High on Fire
Fu manchu
Queens of the stone age
kyuss
orange goblin
Boris (I do believe they are japanese)
Desert sessions
Monster Magnet
Melvins
OM

And other metal:
MASTODON (I can't believe know one has mentioned them yet)
Testament
Opeth
Exodus
Early Mighty Mighty Bosstones (Punk/ska, but still "metal" enough to make my favorites list)
Corrosion of Conformity
Megadeth
Faith no more (more funk metal)
Infectious Grooves
Tool
Voivod

And the list goes on.

With the first two, the lead singers had a little too much... highschool angst(?) in their voice. Musically it was good, but a lead singer will kill it for me. The second two were a little too heavy for me. Thanks for the suggestions though!

Evergrey wasn't bad, but seemed a bit too generic at first hearing. I'll take another look later.

Ah yes, some of the classics. Not a fan of Iron Maiden, the vocals don't seem to fit with the band IMO. Sabbath, Pantera, Metallica are all excellent. I'll take a look at the others.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations! A lot of good stuff I've both never heard of and/or forgotten about.

Dude no way, most Sunn O))) songs are actually 20 minutes or longer.

If you want good metal, but are not into the screaming type stuff, take two clicks:
