TB Bass Guitar Band Wagon - Was it all you expected?

Since I only have access to the types of brands one might commonly find at your local GC, I have bought 95% of the gear that I have owned or currently own based off the recommendations of the many knowledgeable people here at TB. Some purchases were my own ideas that I researched and posted questions before I bought what I was looking for. Other purchases were influenced by the the unavoidable G.A.S for 'flavor of the month' or the 'current band wagon' trend that was current or still is current here at TB. I have to admit that two of the biggest 'flavors' here at TB really weren't my thing. I have learned an expensive lesson when it comes to buying gear.

1. Buy before you try - even if you need to travel to do so. Its cheaper in the long run!

2. Don't give in to the 'flavor of the month' until you see rule #1.

Sadowsky basses have a huge following here at TB. It is easy to see how one could get plenty of recommendations to try one cause you'll love it. Unfortunately, one of my mistake purchase was a Sadowsky Metro MV5...........After playing the Metro I just dont think that all the hype is true..........I am not trying to spark a debate whether or not Sadowsky makes a quality instrument. I am just merely stating that to me, IMHO, Sadowsky doesn't stand up to all the hype and that I should not have let G.A.S inspire my purchase. I took a $$ hit on that sale.

One of the other big names on TB is Thunderfunk. I had a 550-B. I have to say that the TF didn't appeal to me. No matter what I did it sounded to cushiony on the low end and I couldnt get rid of the compression. From all of the research and recommendations I received I was expecting a fast and responsive amp. The TF seemed slow and cushiony. Needless to say I took a $$ hit on that sale as well.

What about you........How was your G.A.S inspired purchase.........Has the 'flavor of the month' at TB held up to what it was hyped to be or did your purchase leave something to be desired?

Please..........No Flaming..............Lets keep this one positive...........Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Lets hear if the masses at TB have led you astray or down the right path to pure tonal bliss!

PS I also have to admit that aside from the two wrong purchases that are mentioned above - the masses have been right about all of the other gear I own.......My Lakland, My Demeters, QSC PLX amps, Epifani Cabs, Accugroove Cabs, Acme Cabs, etc, etc.

I like my Lakland, my Mark Bass LMII, and my Avatar cab, all of which I wouldn't have if it weren't for TB.

The only thing I wasn't impressed with was the Bad Ass II bridge I bought because of recommendations here. I thought it was a huge waste of money.

When something starts to get a lot of hype talk on net fora, my alarm bells go off and I automatically steer clear.

Don't you mean "try before you buy"?

The only thing I bought based on forum "hype" was the Genz-Benz amp I have. All of the "hype" was totally spot-on and, even though there are other bass amps that I like, I have a hard time imagining play through any rig other than Genz in the future.

I have tried many basses and amps based on TB hype. Some turned out to be incredible(Dingwall), some were very good but not for me(Lakland), some I just couldn't see what the fuss was about (not going to mention names in this one).

I usually try to play what I want first, because people are different in what they want that someone else's "ultimate" might be my "lame". And vice versa. But, it is good that TB exposes us to a lot of stuff that isn't readily accessible is most areas, especially the custom builders like Celinder, Valenti, Nash, Stambaugh, or Alleva-Copollo. Its great to have all these options even is most of us don't need or want them.

Looking back, i think TB introduced me to the name of the Rickenbacker. Back then, i only looked at it being a cartoon bass XD

I too wasn't crazy about the Sadowsky Metro that I had, and sold it right away. Don't get me wrong, the thing was constructed fantastically. The fit and finish was a near perfect as I've ever seen. But I didn't like the way it played. I didn't like the neck profile, and I'm not a fan of 19mm spacing. The widest I'll go is 18mm, and even then I wish it was a touch closer. I also had an Fbass BN5 that didn't do anything for me. With the exception of the way it looked, I liked nothing about it.

However, while the LMII is the flavor of the month here, I feel it is well deserved. I would not let myself believe that it could even compare to my Epifani UL502. The LMII is less than half the cost, and in my experience $600 only gets you a very mediocre amp. Well, I finally gave in and tried the LMII at my local GC. Long story short I no longer have the UL502, and am so far a very happy LMII owner.

So there you go, both sides to the band wagon.

A lot of the supposed "hype" stuff here at TB can be experienced in person at the GTG's taking place during the year. The GTG's almost always have a variety of the "flavor-of-the-month" gear. If you have the opportunity to get to a local GTG it's well worth the time ...

+100....I couldn't agree more! I wouldn't own any of the gear I own today had it not been for TB!

+1 Everything from my amp, cabs, cables, tuner, gig bag, etc., I learned about on talkbass, and I've never sounded better. Talkbass is a great resource, but it is a major source of GAS.

Picked up a Schroeder 21012 a while back. Not my cup of tea. It has become a perch for my cat. My Berg, on the other hand, gets used a lot. That was a better flavor for me.

Yes and no. Living in the land of mass produced basses, I have limited exposure to the custom stuff. I already into Conklin and Rob Allen before I got involved with TB. I was exposed to Low end and Stambaugh, which I'll be ordering later.

Members that are local to each other organize these to get together and hang out, try out each others gear, etc.

I tend to be pretty patient (OK, maybe "cheap" is the right word ), so I didn't jump on any bandwagons right away. The constant praise for Lakland, a brand I'd never heard of, actually annoyed me when I first started lurking, but that turned right around once I actually tried their stuff! I now own a CAR DJ4 and couldn't be happier with it--all thanks to TB.

Similarly, I'd never heard of the Mesa Walkabout Scout when I joined TB, but now I own one and love it.

I think the key to using TB's resources is to figure out which posters have the same tone goals as you, or are good at describing tone with different tastes in mind. (KJung is a great example of the latter, particularly in the Amps forum.) Of course, you should also take the opinions of posters who jump from one bass or amp to the next with a shaker full of salt.
