As for how I rate them
Well I'm really surprised at how good my Jag is, I had a CIJ Fender Jag in Shoreline gold which was a very beautiful looking axe.
Not the one I owned but the same guitar.
But as pretty as it looked, as TERRIBLE a guitar it was. The switches were really hard to move and the overall sound of the thing was really lifeless, even a pickup change had no improvement whatsoever.
My Squier Jag not only is a far better sounding and playing instrument, it's also 50% cheaper than the Fender. The only things I changed were the pickguard and the bridge.
My Jag after I just got it home.
My Mustang is actually sounding very similar to my Jag but brasher, my Jag LOVES distortion, my Mustang far less so but when used clean, the middle setting (Both pickups) sound so good, a little hair and slapback echo and it's a rockabilly machine. VERY Fender in sound.
The Mustang's bridge was another surprise, apart from the Kahler bridges I have on several of my guitars, I have seldom encountered a Vibrato that was this responsive, of course with much use it has tuning issues but for surf style warble it works perfectly.
I wouldn't be surprised if Fender in the very near future decides to discontinue these, they simply are too good and will result in a drop of sales from their more upmarket models.
We saw it before with the Squier Vista series and the Squier 51 model, they sold so much of them that Fender was actually losing money over their upmarket models, so they discontinued them.

My Jag after I just got it home. | What kind of bridge did you put on your VM Jag? I am thinking of getting one as a gift for my SIL but I hear the vintage bridges are a PITA. Heck, if I like how it plays as much as I love the looks I might keep it.

Even though I listen to thrash, I like to play the bluesier, rockier, and country type of things. The solo I just learned is I'm the Only One by Meliisa Etheridge. What's one that's a little bit harder to do than that? I'd like to stick with popular songs, wether they were popular 40 years ago or now doesn't matter.

When I got it, someone had already routed a neck pickup cavity (usually it only has a bridge dog-ear P-90 pickup), so I plopped in a pair of Iron Gear RWRP P-90s.
Still needs a lot of work: - Currently wired as a 3VT, soon to be transformed into a 4VT (neck-series-bridge-parallel switch)
- In dire need of a neck shim and setup.
- Pickup polepieces need a bit of flattening to fit into closed covers.
- Pickup height needs to be set and balanced.
- Needs a proper amp as I can't get a nice distorted sound through my bass rig (does a damn good impersonation of crunch and noise-rock sounds, though).
- I need to learn the damn thing.

1.) A demo video of a G&L S-500 Tribute. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDFwy56C6-Q
The entire video is worth watching, but the lead that this guy is playing during the first 30 seconds of the video is fantastic - very acid Jazzy; very Steely Dan-ish.
All guitar demos should start off like this.
This brings us to the next video.
I heard this for the first time this morning at about 6 O'clock on a local college station. At first I thought it was Eric Clapton, but it's not, it's Donald Fagan.
I love this type of blues playing.
I think this album just came out, so if you're hearing it for the first time, enjoy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxvcTxdC1xw

Got a nifty double output and a piezo underneath the bridge, so at the flick of a switch I can go "acoustic" or electric! Can also blend the magnetic and piezo pups outputs through one output or play them through both outputs, a real keeper.
Also own a Fender HM Strat, which is sadly in need of a good luthier fixing up some stuff. It's a made in the USA '89 model with maple fretboard.
They go into this monstrosity:
And then into a Tech 21 Power Engine.

| | | | small combos Haven't seen neo speakers in the guitar world, but I am seeing some smarter guitarists going small.
Currently, my lead guitarist uses a Bugera V5 (5watts, 1x8", 25lbs) for practice. One enclosed soundroom full volume practice we had was very impressive. Its an over achiever.
His main gear is a Marshall 50 watt 1x12 58lb 2 channel combo, which gives him plenty of stage volume anywhere we play, and it gets miked.
The tones generated with either of the above are fabulous.
In my last band, both guitarists played mainly through Fender Twins, weighing 85+ lbs. That's a lot of unnecessary weight, power and speaker (2) to get "the tone"... I've noticed since the lead player has down sized.

I own an 81' K-Yairi acoustic (still the best acoustic I've played), along with a Taylor, a Maton 12 string, and various assorted cheaper acoustics. Gibson '75 Les Paul Standard, 80's LP Studio, 80's Telecaster, 00's Tele Thinline, and a Gretsch EM Pro Jet. I have a 100W Fender "The Twin" (circa '88), and Vox AC30, Vox VT30, and cabinets of all sorts (I never sell cabs - you get peanuts for them and they always come in handy eventually, if only for parts). |

Wonderful blackface sparkle with a second channel voiced more tweed-ish. Heaven.

Also replaced the stock bridge saddles with stainless block saddles.
Now that I have a bass amp again, I run it through that, rather than a guitar amp. Which is what I always use to do.
My old Vox Meteor got ran through a Supro Thunderbolt bass amp.

They actually sound very close to mid-50's tele pups, and you can get them for peanuts.

| | Registered User | | Join Date: May 2012 Location: Louisville KY | | | Tak 2: or Double-Tak So I'm in the local music-go-round the other day and I catch this guitar out of the corner of my eye from halfway across the room. It's a newer '86 version of the '81 Takamine Ef-349 MIJ acoustic electric I got for high school graduation in '83. Same mahogany construction, binding identical, neck feels the same and great mellow tone. Only difference is the '81 has the square Martin copy headstock they had to discontinue using. It even has the same simple yet surprisingly good sounding 2 band EQ. These are great guitars for the money and I think mine is better than most lowend Martins and rivals many pricier ones.
So on close inspection I see a $100 price tag and "as-is" on the tag. Looks like the bridge is cracked and has been repaired and it seems stable enough and plays well. I had to buy it for that price, these guitars fetch $300 in good condition. Now I have a cheap camping guitar that plays and sounds the same as my main acoustic and fits me like a good pair of worn in jeans!
