I'm more a guitarist than I am a bass player but I wield my Jan Knooren Five string in the studio all the time.

I play guitar in a Power Metal band called "Slavantas" where I also wrote most of the songs.
Slavantas - Back in balance - YouTube

I'm the one on the far right with the Bandana. We opened for Vengeance and played what was easily one of the best shows we ever did.

Guitar-wise, a lot of my arsenal is self made because I always have ideas inside my head on what a guitar should be and rather than to spend an enormous amount of money to get the sounds I'm after from stock models, I make them myself.

My "Big Red" explorer. I used this one as my main guitar for several years and it has been a faithful servant but it's getting rather knackered. It has a three piece Maple-walnut-maple body, my preferred combination of Twin humbuckers and Fender scale length and a Kahler bridge.

Me using "Big Red" live.

Two of my variation on a classic theme. The Gibson SG has turned out to be my perfect guitar in terms of weight, play ability and sound. Both of them have Fender Scale length and Fender-style Vintage wire frets. The Upper one sounds unbelievably close to "Big Red" while the lower one's wiring enables me to get pickup combinations that can't be pulled from normal three pickup guitars.

This was to be my master piece, I used top notch mahogany and striped maple for the body, used Shellac Violin Varnish to give it it's striking looks and it has a spectacular Birdseye maple neck. Unfortunately, it weighs a ton and with me having a bad back, left me unable to use it live. I do use it as my main studio guitar though.

Where do I start about this one? Well it has a half scale Mandolin neck on top and a normal tuned neck at the bottom. But like the tele, its too heavy and cumbersome for me to use live and I can't pull it apart to use the parts for something else, something just keeps me from doing so.

Like I said before I also own factory made guitars and the most dear to me is my battered 1989 Squier Stratocaster "The veteran" which was the guitar I learned to play on. Here I am in the studio ready to employ my old warhorse.

Here I am back in 1991 with my first band using "The veteran" live for the very first time. I didn't know it at the time but it was the first of MANY shows where that guitar would be my best friend.

I took this picture of my gear in 1995, I still own both of those guitars but the amps are long gone.

15 years later.

And then there's my Gibson.

I actually owned several Gibsons over the years but they always had issues, they either didn't sound or play right. This one however felt right from the moment I first picked it up. Sometimes, you just KNOW by the first touch.

if i may ask, what draws you to the gibson styles with longer scale lengths?

i used to be a fan of the longer scales, but i went a long time without a 6 string around ... and when i came back to it, found i prefer the shorter scale guitars. I think, it is because i can run heavier strings comfortably. my strat and tele style guitars in the past, i always ran 09's or heavy top / skinny bottom sets ... i find on the LP's i prefer extra heavy (DR coated 11's).

I've only got a nylon string 3/4 acoustic guitar at the moment. I sold my electric guitar years ago. But lately I've been thinking of getting a cheap electric guitar. Guitar was my first instrument.

I tune down a step with my band so the longer scale and the D'Addario 011-056 sets I use make it sound tighter overall. But it's also a case of being used to the longer scale length, having played Fenders for a long time.

It tried the DR Coated strings, they were not worth my money or effort. The coating came off pretty quick and they sounded really lousy after it did.

well, since i only pick the guitar up for an hour or so a couple of days a week, they last pretty good. i am losing some of the coating around the pickups, but they are in good shape up the fretboard. seem to stay brighter longer than the Elixirs do, and not quite as plasticy feeling. i have the driest oily skin in the universe, so i shed skin like a husky in arizona sheds fur ... even an hour a day can kill normal strings for me in a week.

I stick with standard tuning or drop D ... DADGAD when i'm feeling kind of adventurous.

For under $500 acoustic guitars, Yamaha and Fender have some nice ones. Martins are my favorite for sound, feel and playability, but I think their low cost guitars aren't as nice as what's offered from the other two that I mentioned.

I also have 6 string guitars in my possession, but don't have squat for time to play them anymore. I barely even have to time to keep what skills I have on bass let alone another instrument. I also have an old, small upright piano that's been in my family for years. My brother use to have it and gave it to me about 18 years ago. I still can't play it.

I'm getting so sick of having no time these days for what I like. Speaking of, I've got to start getting ready for work now.

I spend most of my time on the skinny strings these days. Lately it's been the '96 SG and '33 Dobro.

I thought I had this GAS thing kicked until I discovered the Lil Dawg Amps Mutt that combines the preamp of a tweed Fender Deluxe with the power section of a tweed Champ.

TB seems like a good place for a guitar thread, otherwise we would have to talk to guitar players

Heres a pic of my old ibanez s470, i love how thin this guitar is. has anyone else played one?

Heres a side shot to show how thin it is

I also have an old gibson gss50 2x10 combo amp from the 60's

Cool guitar I remember trying those when they came out but the "wizard" neck profile is a bit too thin for me, it makes my hand cramp up.

Ibanez also made a bass version in those days.

nice s470. the summer i turned 19 (damn - 20 years ago ... lol) my best friend went to Maine for 2.5 months to hang out with his cousin. I was left a brand new, mint condition s540 in burled mahogany, transparent violin red finish, with the then brand new cosmo black hardware. and a 60 Crate combo amp that was way too big to be in an apartment.

3 things happened that summer:
1. i learned that some guitars are better than others.
2. i discovered that i LOVE Ibanez
3. i learned to play the guitar.

that thing was SO easy to play. setup was perfect - from the 3rd fret to the 22nd fret, exactly 1/8" all the way down, and no rattles or clanks. sustain on par with a LP Standard, even with a trem and bolt on neck.
If i could find another '91 s540 just like it, i would jump on it in a heartbeat. Sadly, Greg sold it a few months later for next to nothing.

I have a couple of electric guitars and a couple of acoustics.
Electric - Charvel 550XL I bought brand new as at the time, I did not have an electric... bought mainly just to noodle around on.
Fender Lead lll - bought it off a guy who was having serious trouble paying his rent. Kinda a cool guitar as it is a mix of both a Tele and a Strat. Super hot p/u's as well.
I don't have a dedicated guitar amp at this time.
I have the first guitar my parents bought me back in 1968, an acoustic Yamaki (sp).
I also "inherited" my father in law's acoustic. It was bought for him as he had shown an interest in playing guitar. He took one lesson and realized that it was going to take time and energy to learn how to play it, so it went into the basement. He offered it to me one day after I pulled it out and farted around on it one day.
This thread reminds me that I really should get some pics of these guitars!

Here's my Ibanez JS1200. It's the Satriani model in CA Red. A beautiful guitar. Everytime I open the case, I am amazed at how nice it looks.

This is my '99 MIM '57 Stratocaster re-issue. It has the v-neck and is also a nice guitar. It has a near bullet-proof finish on it.

Either one sounds great through my Mesa Boogie F-100 amp.
