I'm fortunate enough to have carved myself a living from music through playing and teaching but only really enough to live.
I'm curious how many of you are out there like me where if you had the workflow from playing that you would teach for free?
I'd love to set up a school where we offer free lessons but only to those who prove themselves to practice and/or show promise for excellence!
One school I taught at had arts finding until the Tories came into power and whilst i got paid the students had free lessons!
I currently can't afford to do free lessons but want to in the future. I'm based near Leicester the midlands uk . Is anyone else interested in this nationwide/worldwide at some point in the future?
I just get the feeling there is going to be a skills gap at some point in the next ten to fifteen years due to austerity in uk and world debt etc! If gig work picks up for me again then this is a a real ambition for me!
All of the lessons ive given in my life have been for free. I'm a big believer in it. But I'm blessed that I don't rely on it for income. Also if the student isn't putting in the effort i'd probably charge them just out of principle. Some people wont value something unless that have to pay for it.
Let me understand the question:
If I made a comfortable living from performance/studio work, would I teach for free?
Maybe. It would certainly make the decision to be that philanthropic a lot easier.
As it stands, I'm at about 50/50 living wage from performance/teaching, so I can't even imagine it.
