Teaching a song to my (large) band- any idea how to do it quickly?

Sign in to disble this ad
I really want my church band to learn a new song and the bandleader seems to have no issue with us doing this.

Only problem is this- the band is so big it is split unofficially into three sections, each one acting as its own band.

So I face the difficulty of teaching 30ish musicians this song. Any idea how to do this with the minimum of fuss??

I've already got it as a chart but I was asking more on how I should go about practically teaching 30 musicians at the same time to play this song.

If they have a chart and can read it you countdown and have everyone play together, from there make suggestions and corrections.

How have they learned songs in the past?

30 Musicians...

Do you have a part for each instrument? What is the instrumentation in this group of 30?

Yeah, the worship team I'm part of is divided into three groups. Each group has two guitars, drums, bass, piano, plus some classical instruments, including flute, clarinet, oboe, cello and bassoon, although which musicians play is largely dependant on the songs chosen.

Yes. It's a major skill for us. When I started with the band I had to take a crash course cause I knew no theory at all. Now I'm a theory junkie.

Sounds like you need a crash course in 'Instrumentation and Orchestration" and "Conducting".

I think I'm just going to have to wing it and see what happens.

Do you mean around 30 musicians or musicians who are somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 years old?
