Tenor guitars

I just picked one up a week ago at a antique/flea market for $38. It's a '61 Harmony H1215T archtop that needed a lot of work but I got it squared away. Haven't played much acoustic guitar in years but I'm finding it hard to put this thing down. I have it tuned to open D instead of the more conventional fifths (for tenor) and have been channeling old Delta blues for the past few days.

Has anyone else had something similar happen? You just pick up a "new" instrument and suddenly have a rush of inspiration/creativity surge to the surface?

Tenor guitars are feakin'cool! Nice score I stay on the lookout but so far no luck. I did score a nice dana baritone last year. Love it for it's different texture. Choices rule!

After years of playing 4, 5 and 6-string long scale EBs, I felt that rush within the first hour of playing my MIJ Fender VI years ago, and I still feel that rush every time I play it now--especially since getting a Digitech RP355 whose amp & cab models + stereo effects bring out a rich pallet of electric bass, surf and over-driven slide guitar tones from a flat-wound-strung 'VI.

OP, is this instrument like the one that you now have?

A long time ago Guitar Player magazine did an article on Eddie Lang who, IIRC was known (amongst other things) to drive big band rhythm sections with his tenor guitar playing.

My experience has been that if I'm not looking for something, that's when I find it. My wife pointed the Harmony out otherwise I would have passed it by. It's really been a great way for me to "cross-train".

Do you have pics of your Dana?

That sounds like it would be hella fun.

That's it although mine no longer has the PG and is far more "experienced" looking... so it probably has more mojo and is more valuable.

I saw Daryll (Darrell?) Hall of Hall & Oates playing a weird 4 string guitar 20 years ago. It took a few years to find out it was a tenor guitar. They have now once again become popular, especially along country and folk musicians to play.
I have bought an inexpensive Folk Of The Wood brand one to play, and since it's CDGA tuning did not lend itself to what I play, I changed it to Chicago tuining (DGBE) by using the top strings from an acoustic guitar set.
The guitar has been fun to play and raises eyebrows when I go to acoustic music jams, and makes a nice doubling instrument to a standard guitar when recording.
Have fun with your new baby.
