Tera Melos

If you have not heard the band Tera Melos from Roseville, CA and you are a fan of instrumental rock along the lines of Hella or Don Caballero, or experimental rock like The Mars Volta, I'd suggest giving them a listen, and maybe give some suggestions on cool not-so-popular bands in this genre. It would be nice to discover some cool new music.

very much yes on Tera Melos

they seriously rip live btw.

You didn't mention Battles, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume they were too obvious to mention.

Not completely similiar but if you haven't heard Make Believe/Joan of Arc (*basically* the same band from what I understand) or Cap'n Jazz you should check them out. They're both older indie groups that share a lot of elements with math-rock groups.

More directly similiar would be By The End of Tonight, Future 1983, Trinitron Meets the Mars People, and also Rx Bandits. For some old school flair check out Magma.

whoa, I almost forgot Low Oriole and Tambersauro!

Baalroo, I'll have to check a few of those out. I like your taste, have you ever heard Owls (same as cap'n jazz)? or Ghosts and vodka?
Where/when did you see Tera Melos? I've been lucky enough to see them twice and both times it was incredible.

Yes, I dig those bands too. I saw TM last year here in wichita... they were on tour with FoT and HORSE the band. It was at one of the usual "floor show" venues that most "underground" bands play here in town. There were maybe 200 people at the show and it seemed everyone but me was there to see FoT or Htb, but everyone was talking about Tera Melos at the end of the night.

you MUST check out Low Oriole, they are completely insane. Be warned however: they describe their music as "the sound of pans being thrown against a wall."

The Bassist for Tera Melos asked me if I would give him my brownburst J Bass, after I told how much I liked his butterscotch J Bass

I am sure he was high of his ass at the time.
