Test Driving Used Basses

Tomorrow I'm slated to test out a Highway One J-Bass, currently owned by a gentleman in the area. He works at a church, and invited me there to try it out.

First, I am INCREDIBLY thorough and picky when buying new gear. Second, I've never bought a bass this way -- at the hospitality, or whatever you might call it, of the owner, who I do not know personally.

I was wondering what would be considered "rude" or "overkill". Is it ok to bring along my other basses and my favorite amp when I try it out?

As far as the bass goes, any impressions of it? Suggested price? Suggested pickguard color (the body is 3-tone sunburst nitro).

I feel that if you are capable of making adjustments and repairs, then there's no bass to fear.

They can all be wonderful if you know what you're doing. IF!

I don't ever buy used, but my advice is to not worry about electrical parts nor the setup - just consider if you like it (eye candy) and that the neck or knobs don't fall off and the normal hardware is there.

Having a reasonably straight neck and the truss adjustment that actually moves is a good thing too.

Look for the normal cracks, dings and dents and if you can live with them (I couldn't) - then what's the problem?

Any way you look at it it can be made into a real player - turkey or not.

Whenever buying gear (used or new) if you are able to it is always worth it to check it out in person. Each bass is different from the next, but even if you can play one of the same model at Guitar Center or something. In your case I would check the bass thoroughly and it is alright to be picky. Just know that most used basses can feature the occasional scuff or ding so yeah if your cool with that and you could also use that to your advantage for a possibly cheaper price. The Highway 1's are good solid basses. You can always ask they guy if it would be ok to bring one of your other basses with you and a amp. I try to be as courteous as possible. As for price, do some research and product price searching and comparison and pitch some offers based of that.

i actually prefer used basses. they feel nice after being "broken in." some need a neck or bridge adjustment, but no biggie. i kinda like them dinged and scratched up.
