Texas/ Austin Singer Songwriters

Sign in to disble this ad
I have been digging deep into the Texas /Austin singer songwriters of past and was wondering if anyone else is into them around here. Guy Clark,Willie Nelson, Townes Van Zandt, Blaze Foley, Jubal Clark, Steve Earl and others. I'm looking for more information or others from the area which put out some of this countries greatest music IMO.
I know there has to be more areas like this like Bakersfield CA comes to mind. Anyone know of other singer/songwriter circles like Austin TX? I would love any links to the artists. Thanks.

Those are some great names from the past, but the best Texas country is being played in Athens, GA and Alabama nowadays. Check out the Texas Tornados for some more of the old awesomeness. Currently I think Adam Carroll is quite good too.

Guess you can say I'm part of that scene working with artists that haven't quite made it, yet. Fredy Argir, Bernie Albright "Nardo the Band" and John Friesner "Gravelwhip" are the most recent victims.

You want some really interesting stuff check out Dax Riggs. He used to be a metal guy, moved to Austin, and got into stuff like Townes, Robert Johnson, and other really stripped down dark stuff. He plays the Continental Club quite a bit when he's not on tour. Great stuff. No bass.

...in fact. I would check out the Continental Club website and comb through the musicians that are playing. You're bound to find some good stuff that sounds like it will be right up your alley.

Robert Earl Keen is great story teller through his songs. He's country, but freakin' hilarious...

Check out james McMurtry (son of Larry of Lonesome Dove fame).

Todd Schneider is a great song writer from the area... very whimsical

There are so many great songwriters and musicians in Austin... and probably even more bad ones!

One of my favorite bands from Austin, with pretty good songwriting... home on the strange

In addition to the others mentioned, check out ...

Ray Wylie Hubbard (he's who I play with...a true Texas legend)

Willis Alan Ramsay.

Little known, because he only put out one album in 1972 (if I remember right), but an incredible songwriter....

Doug Sahm
==================================================
Jon Dee Graham

There are so many great writers here....
