Is there a support group for G.A.S.?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have 8 basses ranging from a 5-string fretless to a 9-string fretted and practically everything in between. Yet, I still find myself jonesing for basses that I don't really need. I need to save my money. Is there like an AA group for GAS? I guess I'm half-joking but I'm also half-serious.

Hi Dave, I was just thinking about that very thing today. I think I need to go to a Gasaholics Anonymous meeting. Why, just a few weeks ago I got rid of a bunch of basses, only to buy three more within a very short time. I got in big trouble with my better half. Now I'll probably have to sell one again to show her I'm still in control.

Well, there's no such thing that I know of. Maybe we can start one. Let's see, it might be interesting to recast the Twelve Steps in terms of "gear", like, Step 1: we admitted we were powerless over "gear", and our lives had become unmanageable...

There might be such a place, but it ain't here. Why don't you give our ol' buddy Gard a call? He'll help you out, I'm sure.

OK I'm starting to think I'm not normal! I don't have GAS! None what so ever. I've found the perfect bass. I've also found the perfect amp/speaker combination several times over. what else is there to GAS over?

Hi, my name is Jody,..........and I have G.A.S.

Maybe we should use this thread as the support group, and come here when the G.A.S. attacks. I sure could use it.

You probably have latent GAS. Give it time ...

You're in deep trouble, man. Things won't get better until you break out of this denial.

Yeah, me too. I found a sound I like and now I'm satisfied with what I have. But I do think I would have GAS if I had more money. When you are broke you don't really know what you are missing - just like the saying 'ignorance is bliss'.

That's the problem. Having the money but needing to save the money. I get a bonus every quarter. I've been using it to pay for stuff for my studio but now I'm looking at basses again. I need to save some money to maybe put down on a house someday.

Perhaps Paul can add a GASaholics Anonymous forum here where we can go for support. We can talk each other out of buying whatever bass we have our eye one.

I'm not in denial. I was in Sydney's only specialist Bass store yesterday. They've got some stuff which other might find very yummy and I wasn't even tempted.

I'm not broke, I'm content! And you're just jealous

I certainly admire/envy the players that keep the same gear year after year. Look at Angus Young...same guitar, same amp, no effects for how many decades.

Me on the other hand...I enjoy playing "with" bass, amp, speaker, etc. more than I do playing bass. With out G.A.S (and eBay) I'd probably lose interest again. Eli once challenged me to name all the gear that I had owned for more than two years...at the time I believe it was one speaker cabinet that I had built myself. Now, it's quite a bit more.

To rid yourself of G.A.S you'd probably have to stop visiting TalkBass and attend a lecture for a book that talks about living a spartan lifestyle...

Pete, Pete wake up...

Ok, OK, perhaps that was a little over the top...you'd certainly have to train yourself to skip over the first 4 sub-forums....
