things us bassists are jealous of guitar---confession

well basically post anything you might be a bit jealous about guitar, even if its a bit.

I know I may get killed

Anyways for me it's the sheer voice that guitarists get when the play emotion filled solo's that is the ONLY thing i wish i could do with bass. I've heard bass solos with feel but nothing so far has come close to making me feel like having a tear as some guitar solo's do. I mean Maggot Brain, Floods, Time, Baker Street, Epitaph and the godfather theme slash did in Argentina, all so beautiful and filled with feel that just puts me in this place.

I've tried some stuff like that on bass and its just not the same i find. The closest, to me at least is the bass solo at the start of "Pigs" by Pink Floyd.

The only thing I like about the guitar is the flamenco spanish stuff they can play and/or the acoustic nylon/steel string solo stuff that they can do.

You need to hear Michael Manring solo. And I might add anything from "Hejira" Joni Mitchell's album with Jaco playing on it. If you're not moved by the title song? Get yourself a little amp and one o' them 6 strings with a whammy bar,and a whole bunch of effects, and wail!

I think it's easier for a guitarist, or any chordal instrument, to convey new song ideas.

Hmm, I think a classical guitar is a good acoustic instrument for a bassist.

Due to scale and string spacing it is not more similar to electric guitar than it is to bass.
Plus you must play fingerstyle on it.
(note: Cliff Burton took a classical guitar with him everywhere, so if he had inspiration he could play or compose something)

Electric guitars have the acoustic as their counterpart.

I actually started off studying classical guitar, and that's why I felt bass was a much better fit for me than guitar, which I've also tried but just never really got into.

As far as guitar envy, I get frustrated trying to transcribe from recordings and not always being able to hear the bassline, while the guitar is loud and clear.

Seriously though, someone has already mentioned the ability to capture a lot of emotion in guitar solos. I agree. You can't really melt faces with a bass solo.

I heard some of the solo's some recommended, sorry they are great and have emotion but it still doesn't hit what i'm going for.

Agreed with the OP about about the solo stuff. Also not having to worry about low end loss with effects or getting lost in the mix.

I wish i could play guitar. I admit it. I love acoustic stuff, would love being a campfire crooner And of course, it'd be a thrill playing those rocking riffs and those finger-flying solos. Maybe if I'd actually practise with the acoustic I bought a while ago I'd be closer...

The wide variety of different amps/pedals available to guitarists is enviable. The Bass gear world has caught up greatly in recent years but we still have a ways to go.
