thinking of a come back

i gave up bass after playing for some 10 years in a few bands and such to get some things together, try and learn another instrument (mainly guitar) and work on some personal music at home while i finished school and caught up on things. its been about 3 years since i left my last band and now i have been having a music itch.

i contacted a band from craigs list on a whim who is literally right around the corner of my house and after meeting them and them really wanting me to join i had second thoughts. it wasn't them or their music its just that i seriously wanted to get into a band playing a different instrument this time but just haven't had the time to get good enough for anything else. working on music myself at home just didn't get anywhere like i wanted (it started off with a bang but fizzled out after a while when my life got hectic).

my question is if you were me and really wanted to play in a band again and hit the scene would you jump back into "the devil" you already know "just" so you could get back out, or would you wait and hold off and "NOW" that life has finally settled would you take even more time to sit and practice another instrument instead (which may actually turn out to be never the way my life runs). also playing out and practicing another instrument would be out of the question because of my serious lack of personal time. now i know most of you live for your spot in the band but this is if you were me, so as hard as it is "try" and put yourself in my shoes (not an insult just trying to set a mood lol).

i have never posted here before so don't take offense or anything I'm just in a bit of a pickle and being this is a "bass" forum i just figured WTH. i don't want to join some band and have them get settled with me just to have me walk out a month later and set them back to square one but i do miss making music alot.

thanks

playing with musicians will get you noticed by other musicians and in that circle. I would do it.

I just went through what you are going through in a way. i was out for 17 years. I fiddled with writing and guitar. I am back in a band playing bass.

It is, after all, what I do best. I still feel the same way on a stage I did 17 years ago. My only guitar any more is the tracks I lay down fiddling with songs. That seems to satisfy me.

If you were to join a band that was planning say, a 6 month touring schedule, then you need to know if you are serious or not. Local guys, I let 'em know right away how I felt.

When they asked me if I was in it for the long haul I think my exact quote was:

"I've played in my garage before, I probably will again. Now who wants to play music?"

i dont get your comment here; sorry maybe i'm just not reading it right.

i have also decided to gather a few of my friends together who i used to play with and start a "no pressure, cover only, open mic only, practice like every 3 weeks, not really a band-band". maybe that will quell my urges for a bit, and i would not have to really say i am joining a band. this other band emailed me again though. i think i am also less interested in joining another already established band and going by their rules and such.

If you want to play, I think only you will know when its right to come back. A no pressure band as your thinking of is a good way to see if you like being back.
