A majority of the fans you see at one of these types of events in my observation are sweaty, bearded, tattooed, fat guys, with no chicks in sight.
And this is me talking more about the subject. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDzH0Fp8P2g
Now I think I did a semi good job because a 15 year old called me a di*k in the comment section, but I have to do better. IMHO one has not been totally successful until the term a****le is lodged. LOL

Glam guys dress like girls?
What about Rush, they're not heavy. I don't see to many chicks at thier shows
My obersvance is that there is a small percentage of people in general that enjoy the intensity, rage, hate and power that is in the more extreme stuff. To alot of people its just too fast. To much for their conditioned pop song brain to handle. Most people enjoy catchy and repatative not insane and repulsive.
Maybe the dude to chick ratio has something to do with brain chemistry? There should be some studies done immediately!

If I were to listen music to get chicks I would be listening to Pop music. Probably you have seen a bunch of fat guys in the Metal scene but that's becauseyou live in the U.S and a lot of people there are Fat.

I remember when metal was groups like early Sabbath and Mountain and music that was more about melody and riffs than pure speed and someone trying to clear their throat into a microphone.
I have a question for the death metalheads: What's the fascination with death? In my day (70's, I'm 52 years old) it was sex, drugs and rock and roll. Granted, in those days most drugs could be slept off in 8 hours or so and the worst STD could be taken care of with some antibiotics. These days loose sex and some drugs can mean death on the first go-round. But still, there was gratification in sex and drugs and rock and roll.
What's the gratification in death? I suspect that most death rock fans have never really encountered death. If they had, it might not be so appealing. As a volunteer firefighter in a rural community, I answered many motor vehicle accidents (MVA's). There are lots more of those than fires. I've had to look someone in the eye who I knew without a doubt was dying within minutes or seconds and the best I could do was tell them we were going to take good care of them and get them to the hospital so the doctors could take care of them. I've tried to apply pressure to stop someone from bleeding out unsuccessfully and wondered if I could have done something more and saved them. I've gone back to the station and seen mothers, fathers, wives and husbands who have just heard their loved one was in an accident asking me for status. I knew they had died, and I'm sure my face gave it away, but not being a doctor I couldn't pronounce anyone dead so all I could do was tell them where their loved one was taken and the doctor could tell them more. I'm not whining, because, as our chief always said "you may not hear it, but people are thankful for you being there today". And it's true, it was an honor for me to do it.
The only reason I relate the story is to ask a question of the death metal guys: In light of the experiences I've told you about above, what makes death so cool to you? Do you want to die? Do you want your loved ones to die? Would that be cool? In a way, it's a silly question, because we are all going to die at some point, but it's probably not going to be a really cool party. If you're lucky, you'll stop breathing and pee and poop on yourself at age 102. If your're unlucky there are a myriad of ways you can go, some quick and painless and some horribly painful and drawn out.
Cool huh?
The only explanation I can come up with is the age-old "shock your elders" explanation.
If there's a better one I'd love to hear it.
