G Love & Special Sauce (DB-sic bass lines!)
Big Head Todd and the monsters (very well-seasoned player)
John Mayer trio (much better than just reg john mayer bs IMO)
Primus (duh)
Jeff Beck (see live at ronnie scott's)
Corea, Clarke, and White (check out "Forever", Stanley tears it up... smoothly)

You seem surprised that you have different opinions....
What would you consider some of the best bass lines?

I think less players means more space for everyone in general, and it certainly opens up more space for the bass player to also be more prominent and forward in the mix.
Combine that with a skilled bass player, and it certainly seems the magic can happen.

Hawkwind are a slightly more tricky one to get around.

| Black Sabbath also technically aren't a trio either, unless you discount the vocalists and only count the guys playing instruments.

Corea, Clarke, and White (check out "Forever", Stanley tears it up... smoothly) | The band Jeff had in place for the Ronnie Scott shows featured a very talented Key board player. I am not sure if they would be classified as a trio.

| True, so it just depends on the criteria being used to define trio. Any four piece where the singer is only a singer could be classified as a trio for these purposes, but that would make a great many more "trios" to consider, which is fine by me.
