I think less players means more space for everyone in general, and it certainly opens up more space for the bass player to also be more prominent and forward in the mix.
Combine that with a skilled bass player, and it certainly seems the magic can happen.

| Black Sabbath also technically aren't a trio either, unless you discount the vocalists and only count the guys playing instruments.

| True, so it just depends on the criteria being used to define trio. Any four piece where the singer is only a singer could be classified as a trio for these purposes, but that would make a great many more "trios" to consider, which is fine by me.
