Jeff Healey Band

Wild T and the Spirit

ZZ Top - the bass lines are not complicated but suitable for the songs

The Beatles are a rather notable exception.- excellent band and bass lines, and a lot going on instrumentally.

Dang! I forgot all about their keys player (which is a shame). I know what I'm doing tonight!

It could be because of their new album. A very disappointed Muse fan here.

Love me some power trio. Don't care which one. Love 'em all. Medeski Martin & Wood!

OK, for the purposes of this thread Three Piece = only three playing instruments, and can include a vocalist taped to the front (we're going to get flack if there's a TalkingVocals site out there monitoring us.....)

Wow, imagine Van Halen as a strict power trio and Mike Anthony as frontman on vocals......the world would be a different place....

So I'll throw in

The Easybeats

And Clef de fa: it was intended to be a subjective statement. The idea is to you expose yourself to other people's opinions and preferences so you might discover something new and wonderful you weren't aware existed. Don't just say "I don't like this" and walk away. Step up, and share with us where you find beauty in basslines.

I don't think number of instruments has anything to do with how good the basslines are. As someone already said, you have the Beatles. Then there is the bassline to Duran Duran's Rio. And some of the 3 pieces listed overdubbed in the studio. If you see Green Day live you most often see another guitarist on stage with them.

My take on it is that on balance in 3 piece rock/pop/punk/grunge groups the bass is employed in a much more musically prominent role and has greater presence in the mix and than larger groups who rely on other guitars/keys/horns/reeds to add musical depth, using the bass to fill more of a rhythm role. The Fab Four were a noteable exception to the rule, as are ZZ Top (in reverse - no offense Dusty, you still rock!).

Motown/soul/funk/old school R&B are in a different category again where the bass provides the musical anchor to begin with and the others fit in.

Jazz is whatever Jazz wants to be. And that is as it should be.

Nearly forgot to add:

I've always had an affinity for Mike Dirnt. He has some cool stuff and is a great player for his genre.

Queen - John Deacon's lines are always exactly what the song calls for. And yeah, Freddie played a lot of piano, but don't think about that

I've played in about 7 or 8 bands over the last 20 odd years, and half have been 3 pieces. I always sing and play bass. I manage to work in a lot of lines in between vocals. I figure, why be the guy that "no one knows is playing until they stop"?

Probably going to be playing bass in a power trio. Looks like I got a lot of greats to take influence from!

I think you're onto something there: this must be why I'm still enjoying the trios and quartets I'm with, but getting bored playing with the 7-piece that's just started rehearsing again. And I thought it was just because they weren't much good!
