I rather enjoy the challenge and freedom a 3 piece forces/offers. I developed much of my bass style playing in 3 pieces. I got better at filling on bass over the years. Our current band is a 3 piece, and our guitar player plays in another band. He plays more sparsely in our band because he can, switching to horn pads and horn lines a lot, because he doesn't have as much space to fill...and I'm not a busy bass player. His other bass player is very rudimentary and has never figured out how to operate in a 3 piece. He plays the same whether 3 piece, or 5 piece.
Most of the mentioned 3 piece groups add at least rhythm guitar to their recordings. I enjoy when they don't. |

What's your reason for disagreeing? Examples?

Great over-the-top grungy, bubbly and frantic lines on their early stuff and some serious funky/jazzy stuff on the later albums. Always very creative basslines that often lead the tune.

Down with the bass!

But fair enough, he generally fell into more of the timekeeping role, much like Dusty Hill does in ZZ Top (as much as I lke them, I can't understand why people keep listing ZZ Top as having inspirational basslines).
