Probably gonna get a lot of flak for this, but RHCP. Four people there might be, I still consider them a three piece. At their best, Frusciante, Flea, and Smith are unstoppable. Kiedis is just the icing on top.

Many of the bands I play in and have played in since the late 60's were/are three pieces. I rather enjoy the challenge and freedom a 3 piece forces/offers. I developed much of my bass style playing in 3 pieces. I got better at filling on bass over the years. Our current band is a 3 piece, and our guitar player plays in another band. He plays more sparsely in our band because he can, switching to horn pads and horn lines a lot, because he doesn't have as much space to fill...and I'm not a busy bass player. His other bass player is very rudimentary and has never figured out how to operate in a 3 piece. He plays the same whether 3 piece, or 5 piece.

Most of the mentioned 3 piece groups add at least rhythm guitar to their recordings. I enjoy when they don't.

"No" isn't an argument. (We have a politician in Australia who thinks it is, but that's beside the point.)

What's your reason for disagreeing? Examples?

It's a fine argument!

Can't believe no one's said the Minutemen! Great over-the-top grungy, bubbly and frantic lines on their early stuff and some serious funky/jazzy stuff on the later albums. Always very creative basslines that often lead the tune.

Excellent call! Dig me some Watt! Especially Banyan. And Hellride. Hyphenated-Man is a monster album. Saw it live twice. Down with the bass!

I.O.U. - Back in the early 80s, I saw a 3 piece called I.O.U. that was Allan Holdsworth on guitar, Jeff Berlin on bass, and Chad Wackerman on drums they were amazing.

It's hard to be considered a standout when you're backing someone like Jimi Hendrix, and have a maniac drummer like Mitchell who treated time as an abstract concept.

But fair enough, he generally fell into more of the timekeeping role, much like Dusty Hill does in ZZ Top (as much as I lke them, I can't understand why people keep listing ZZ Top as having inspirational basslines).

The Rainbow Bridge band was the best Hendrix formation imo. Jimi's on a whole other level with those dudes.

Anyone mention Robben Ford and the Blue Line?
