time to hang up bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
ive started to think its time to quit bass and move on to something else. Its been weeks since i picked up my bass and when i pick it up i no longer have the enthusiasm i had when i first started.

Ive tried jamming with some friends and i just cant get the spark i had when i played lived a couple years ago.

Perhaps i need to try some different styles or learn more theory. But i get the urge to to pick up a different instrument.

Im sure this is common fromtime to time for us bassists but is there a time to hang it up and pursue a different instrument?

I've messed around with other instruments, but I'll never put bass down. Learning something new could help re-light the spark- some new theory, or some cool new tunes, maybe a genre of music with which you are not so familiar.

Lessons, perhaps? Sounds like you might just need a new challenge, something to keep you interested.

It's happened to me before. How long have you been playing? Try playing some tunes you like. May I suggest Rush?

Find people who will appreciate you as a bassist? Wait... who goes nuts over the bassist? Eh. Nevermind.

Haha, in all seriousness, I've felt like that before. I bought a guitar and my bro has the drums. I've played a vibraphone and piano at most school A LOT! (IMHO the vibraphone and pianos have the best ALL AROUND tones ever!) but the guitar is on eBay, I never touch those drums anymore, I still keep up with piano to play acoustic guitar songs but I don't practice religiously, and I don't really mess with the vibraphone anymore.

I will always love bass the most. It's my comfort zone and the tone I will always love most. After a long day at school or work, all I wanna do is talk to my girlfriend and play some bass. Do I feel a spark everytime I pick it up? Nope. I'm done with flirting with my bass... now we just make love ; ) shhh don't tell my girlfriend hahaha jk

What? I don't think you we're meant to be a bassist. Go poke around on something else. Bass for me has been Heaven & Hell. In my 20 years playing on & off I've only realy had a bass in hand 13 years. let's just say I've been in alot of bands & have quit playing after each band broke up only to find myself drawn back to the bass by anothe band wanting me to play. I was 18 when I got my first bass in Jan. I'll be 40 years old. I just started another Indie prog metal band & my wife says I'm a total jerk to be around If I'm not playing bass in a band. If you don't feel it it's not you. If you let go of it & you can live with yourself it's not for you. I could & would never pick up a guitar again (I started on guitar @ age 16) It wasn't meant for me, bass was. You will find your way as soon as you let go.
