Time for an upgrade?

Just curious. When did you know it was time to upgrade from whatever you are playing now?

Is it even possible to "outgrow" an instrument? I love what I am playing now (MIM P). Of course GAS occurs, but I know the reasons for that .

I have heard of outgrowing, any truth to that?

I guess as you play more, what you need from your bass will become apparent. Playing for two years, starting to see that as far as minor things..

It's not really possible to 'upgrade' a bass, because bass performance can't be measured in terms where you can say that one bass is better or worse than another (apart from obvious exceptions, like basses that just 'don't work', or cut you!). Of course when you know what your preferences are, you can know what an upgrade would be *for you*...

Another bass might allow you a different sound, or facilitate different techniques - you won't really know until you try it... but that can be a long road that ends back where you started from.

I'd say if you're happy, be happy!

I don't know about outgrowing your MIM P. Those are fine basses.
I think you've got GAS... Maybe for a Jazz?

Makes sense (a jazz would be nice, never tried one). It just crazy how much is opening up for me since playing (which has been two years). So many variables that go into effect.

What I once though was just plucking the string, has now progressed to music theory, technique, etc...

Sorry, didn't mean to derail the thread I started lol.

I think that's very relevant though... we all want to grow and expand our capacity on the bass - you can do that by changing equipment, or by learning new techniques... or both...

Often, learning something new is a better move than buying something new...

When I realized I wouldn't be happy with any bass until I had my dream instrument (StingRay), I knew it was time to upgrade.
