They have Guitar hereos contests and kids freak out....I guess it is alot easier to buy a video game which is all it is and let the kid push a button at the right time and think he or she is making music.....though if you put a real instruments in there hands they dont want to practice.....all of a sudden the kid is alex lifeson cause he made it thru the whole song on his video game guitar without messing up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78D00dYOBrM |

I am actually getting tired of seeing these "Rock Band/Guitar Hero" sux threads.
My niece loves it and can kick my butt. She may actually start learning guitar because of it. So my impression of the game it's better for her to play that than waste away watching "teenie" shows or getting into trouble somewhere else.
Video Game culture is here to stay. So be prepared to see televised events and competitions. |

It's just a game. |

Believe it or not not everyone wants to spend a lot of time learning an intrument. Some quite like playing video games instead. |

To put it in another light, almost everyone can dance, but DDR was still a popular game. Not because people had no other opportunity to dance or thought it was a substitute to dancing, but because they considered it a good, funny reflex game.
In any case, GH was one of the few good things that happened in the music industry lately. It's a very good advertisement medium for bands to showcase their music and a good stimulus for gamers to consider learning a real instrument. |

We're getting people at gigs who suddenly recognise previously obscure songs because they're on guitar hero. A lot of great classic heavy rock stuff is now mainstream, and as a band who play that stuff we're happy to ride that. |

The younger people *want* to hear those songs, because they play with them on their video games.
At 46, I'm the "baby" in my band. I'd made a short list of new covers for us, just to change things up a bit. The guys were like, "Why those?" Because, boys, they are top songs on Guitar Hero, and everyone knows them and wants to hear 'em.
My neighbor's daughter has decided to try bass, after playing it in Guitar Hero with her brother. She was going to play guitar, but never really took to it like her bro did. But she says when they play GH, she can hear the bass lines better, and they come to her easily. So, she tried her uncle's bass, and mine, and has decided that she digs the real thing even more than the game.
She's getting a short-scale Ibanez for Christmas. |

When someone says this it becomes obvious that they don't understand videogames. Should the people playing Halo "get a real gun" or the people playing Oblivion "get a real magical empire?"
Not everyone wants to be a musician, but lots of people like playing videogames. Just because someone watches The Wall doesn't mean they should go buy a guitar. It's entertainment.

The instant gratification of these games takes much less effort than the real thing. I don't think it's too problematic now, but I could see it hurting things in the long run when kids are inspired by these games, but too bored with the real thing. |
