TBQH, I think he's just hating on them because they're popular and wants to sound smart. Half of his sentences don't even make sense

"As far as rap music goes, he may deserve credit for his virtuosity within particular conventions, but a genre that lacks melody and little more than vocal dexterity and intrinsic rhythm just does not transfer directly to its antithesis. "

Meh,...I don't really care for any of the bands this guy listed*; I could care even less about his opinions, or that of any other critic for that matter.

*Although I don't consider Cobain a genius (unless I'm being sarcastic); I do enjoy Nirvana's music.

I really don't understand this list. As far as I can tell, he has no idea what he is on about.

"Coz, like, Taylor Swift iz all liek, **** at musik 'n stuff"

Well duh. Popular music has been over-rated for the past.. well.. forever.

Wow, Nirvana. I thought they died with Kurt 16 years ago. Most of the others I agree with. People eat what whatever the mainstream feeds them.

Check it out. I went to an open mic a few weeks ago that was mainly hip hop. One of the main guys in charge of the event, who also was an artist whos spent time abroad in Japan, Europe, and some other places broke it down so smoothly. He said, "Entertainment business is the business of entertainment. Show business is the business of show. Alot of these artists dont really give a dang if their music isnt deep, or on some galactic level that leaves ppl scratching their heads 20 yrs from now. Thats what WE complain about. Also, ppl dont always want to think about music. Sometimes they want to GET AWAY from thinking. Coltrane is amazing, but ppl dont always want to analyze everything they hear all the time. Heck some ppl think all day at their jobs and use music to escape that, go to another place." After he said that, I never gave another negative thought about ppl like Lil Wayne or Nikki Minaj, or any of these other ppl out there makin millions on elementary lines or ridiculous lyrics.

Pretty spot on. Most of these artists sell millions of copies to kids under 15, now I don't know about most people, but I personally didn't start developing a distinct music taste untill I was at least 13 or 14, I just listened to whatever my parents played on the car stereo.

Personally, I don't like the "business" side of it as I see it as a form of exploitation of the young, but there isn't much thats going to change that. However, when people refer to pop acts as "music genius" it will occasionally make my blood boil.

If I don't want to think when I listen to music I put on classical music, but if other people want to listen to Kanye West, they are welcome to. Don't try to convince me he is the new Dylan though.

I have to say I agree with him. After a long time I finally enjoy some Nirvana but I've always been of the opinion they've been overrated.

Nirvana?

Didn't Cobain die last century? How is that representative of "today"?

That list makes sense. Obvious and cliched, maybe, but it makes sense.

Miley Cyrus. She's all ten. That said, the list seems about right.

Don't know if the list is making any sense... there might be even worse out there

A pity cute little Taylor doesn't pick up some more serious repertoire. Great voice. Who knows, in due time...

Yeah, I pretty much agree.

Cute little Taylor couldn't find pitch without a Harmonizer if Roy Halliday and Justin Verlander were in the studio.

And while Nirvana is tremendously overrated I'm not sure they're relevant.

Miley? I'm not sure her fans can read whole words yet, I think the author would have to tex his message to get them to read it. I don't know if I'd call her overrated. It's not like I've seen her on the Rolling Stones list of most influential artist or anything.

I must admit pop music today is far more of a vast wasteland then it was when I was in HS. Yeah we had the Osmonds and the Jackson 5 (Jr. High), but at least they could actually sing. But you look at the best selling records of the 70's verse today, theres a lot less fluff in that older stuff. Although in fairness if we would have had pitch shifters and Pro tools, Farah and Ponch might have dominated the charts.

while nirvana was a poor choice, i definitely agree with swift/gaga/keisha/kanye/lil wayne being on the list. these people need to just go away.

What a little bashfest.... This sort of petty ratting, alongside the lame-brain "no good bands have existed since 1979" attitude really annoy me. I don't understand why people complain as though mainstream music is somehow a modern invention.

As for Nirvana being on the list, how are they in music today? Cobain redecorated his garage wall in 1994.

The list is pretty plausible.
