Top lyricists

Coming up with lyrics is the hardest part of writing for me, the music, melody, and arrangement are never the problem, it's always coming up with good lyrics. So I was considering who my favorite lyricists were, those who have been consistent from their first album. So come up with your 3 favorites, I'm interested in some other opinions and will hopefully discover someone I never heard. By the way mine are: Tom Waits, Roger Waters, and Gord Downie. And trust me not having Townshend, Cohen, or Lennon in my top 3 isn't easy, and beside I'm sure they'll be mentioned by someone else.

Warrel Dane of Nevermore
Michael Stanne of Dark Tranquility
Niklas Sundin of Dark Tranquility

All metal bands, but their lyrics are fantastic, particularly Stanne and Sundin's.

edit: on second thought, might need to scratch Dustin Kensrue to add Bernie Taupin. I dunno, that's a close one to me.

While I'm not so much into his music, I have to admit Burt Bacharach is pretty damn good. How was your show by the way? I work on weekends, but keep posting them and hopefully I can make it to one.

Can't believe I forgot Neil Young but I did just want to limit myself to 3 people.
Rivers Coumo's lyrics on their Pinkerton album are excellent, don't care so much for their last couple though.

Hmm. Thinkin' on it, these names are pretty aged. Perhaps I pay little attention to lyrics any more, eh?
