Trace Elliot belongs to Peavey now?

Just poking around the Peavey website and noticed the Trace Elliot logo. When did that change occur? Wasn't Trace Elliot bought by Gibson? Please don't tell me Gibson is Peavey now too!

According to Wikipedia, they've been bought by Peavey 5 years ago.

Gibson bought Trace Elliot in 1998. Peavey acquired the brand name in 2005.

My first guess is that Peavey actually manages to keep their prices relatively low for the amount of quality they are delivering.
Gibson however....not so much.

beyond old news. Gibson bought and killed them! Peavey picked up the pieces, but I dont think they sound like the old Trace stuff. Ashdown was founded by Mark Gooday, chief engineer at Trace during the glory days.

I was working in a music store when Trace gear hit the market. Everyone told me that I *MUST* own trace gear.... so I checked it out.

After thoroughly working over several pieces, I concluded that TL was 99% hype. Black-lights in the heads? What a waste of current... They all sounded honky and bland to me. All the metal & hairband kids were rushing to dump their ampeg gear to buy Trace because a few high-profile players were endorsing it. Again, very very silly.

I, for one, was pleased to see their star fall.

Now, here's the odd paradox: I have been using an Ashdown head I bought new 10 years ago... and love it. Go figure!

That is odd to me because while I love "vintage" TE gear, I've never understood the allure of Ashdown besides appearances. Mind you, I haven't played through that much or made that much concerted effort to find out their best models, etc.

I'll say this, Trace was the first really workable sounding amps for Bass. Ampeg was the same old wonkish sound and still is, play a Fender, buy an SVT, and voila you are live in the 60's. The black light was not a selling point, as sales floors were usually quite well lit.(Sam Ash and Mannys come to mind) I bought my first AH500x in 1984, and love the older Trace stuff to this day. Bland is subjective, an SVT is Bland, a Bassman is bland, my old HIWATT was bland, My Trace was anything but bland, still to this day.

As for the op, I am sure one of Hartley's kids will worm their way in and turn it into the next SWR. too bad.

Except for the USA Cirrus, all Peavey basses are imports. So the better comparison might be Peavey to Epiphone.

At least Gibsons are MIA. They may not meet everyone's lofty expectations (both my Gibson basses are just fine, to me) but I gotta support Gibson's keeping the MIA label.

Peavey used to build a quality MIA bass at a reasonable price. Their current line still features some pretty decent (imported) basses, but MIA at reasonable cost? MIA Cirrus are expensive, just as high as Ric, Fender, Gibson, etc.

Looks like Carvin is the only MIA mfr to build basses in the sub-$1000 dept.

I wish Peavey still made basses like the Foundation & Dyna.

As far as Trace Elliott, I had occasion to use 1 of their stacks, once. Just plugged in a Pbass and went to work. The amp sounded great: huge, one of the best sounding rigs I've played through. Of course, this was in the pre-Gibson days...

Unfortunately, most of these are no longer made .

Going back to the topic: ALL YOUR BASS [amps] ARE BELONG TO US!
