Travelling to Canada to buy used bass gear

Sign in to disble this ad
Does anyone know what one can expect when travelling by car from the US to Canada, buying used US-made gear from a private party, and then coming back to the US? Will Customs ask about the gear (assume a large bass cab that they can see)? Do you have to declare anything? Do you have to pay a tax? Will the border agent find my imitation of Cheech and Chong amusing?

I searched both the Canadian and US Customs web sites for the answers, and the government gobbledegook didn't tell me a thing....

Just take some of your other gear with you, and say that you are coming back from jamming with a few friends. The gear that you have will back up your story.

Declare what you've bought, show them a receipt, and pay sales tax on it (no duty on made in US gear). They will most likely notice a big bass cab in the back of your car.
I personally wouldn't mess around trying to sneak gear across, it's just not worth it. If you get caught it can make it a real hassle to cross the border, those computers have long memories.

They will absolutely NOT find your cheech and chong routine funny. They might find ripping your car's interior apart and giving you an anal probe funny though

No duty on US made goods. Tell them you've owned it for a while and were jamming, bring your bass to test the cab anyway when you buy it.

Coming into Canada, the fine people at Canadian border will ask you why you want to come to Canada ?.. etc etc .. Just tell them you are going shopping.

If you are buying gear at a retail store, show them your ID when you make a purchase or at least tell them you are a US citizen , so they can tax exempt you.

I ship electronics to the USA everyday on a retail basis and no taxes charged for shipped items out of Canada to my US customers, but I am not sure about US citizens buying stuff here in person and talking it back in a vehicle to the US ..

ask anyways for tax exempt if you are buying at a store..

If you are buying private or at a retail store, better off to change your money to CAD before coming over, or at least change it at a money exchange before going shopping..

Retail stores may or may not take USD, but if they do, you may not get the exchange rate of the day.

Going back to the US , you won't have to even stop or deal with the customs people here in Canada, but you will have to stop for US customs, and your probably better off telling them what you bought up here and claim it up front ..

If you buy private gear here, get the seller to make you a sales receipt, ask nice and get one made for a bit less than what you actually paid.

( may save you tax $$ going home )

As long as it the receipt seems close to reasonable, you will have no issues at the border going home.

They may charge you a state sales tax, but other than that, I think thats all you be asked to pay going home ..

Have fun ..

More Americans should come to Canada shopping! Please! Help drive our dollar back up where it belongs so we can go south and shop again!
