Tribute bands, anyone??

My primary 80's band does tons of club/festivals work, we make good $$ and have loads of fun, however:

I also play in an INXS trib band here in SoCal, and it's great fun. We do casinos, outdoor venues and all that and just have a blast doing our one-hour set, usually with other trib bands. We'll do a show or two a month and just let it rip. All the bands hang out together, trade horror/Godhead stories and just have a sensational show.

I respect each and every one of you original cats (I know you can rip it), so please go easy on us "cover" players.

Any other Trib cats out there??

I can't add anything to your post, but I have a question. Do you ever hear any blues cover bands in casinos?

Can't say that I have. But there are, in the SoCal area, many blues clubs (Cozy's to start with) that stick with traditonal blues and do very well with it.

I used to play the sax in junior high, and I've been seriously thinking about picking it back up once I got the money...

...of course, I'd have to get ahold of some Morphine albums...

Also, if you don't have any Morphine, I'd strongly recommend checking them out. "Cure for Pain" would be a fantastic start.

I play and have been playing in My Led Zeppelin tribute band same members and all for 23 years! I also do a female fronted KISS band, Notice I said band, We don't do the make-up or nothing we are all just a bunch of 35+ year olds that love KISS and just play the music of.
I also have my original thing called GO.

I have a flaming lips tribute band constantly on back burner. Basically as an excuse to get glitter bombs and blow them up.

I have always wanted to be in an all-girl 80s Metal tribute band. Something like a tribute to Joan Jett, Heart, Lita Ford, Pat Benetar, Girlschool kinda deal. It's just so hard to find any women that are into that stuff and play well enough to be able to carry it off. Everytime I find someone they live on the other side of the country. The two bands I dream of being in are: ac/dshe and The Iron Maidens.

Yep, Morphine seems mostly known for having bari sax

I was recently asked to play in the RHCP tribute. 6 Months ago the Bon Jovi and INXS tributes asked me to join at about the same time, and I had a friend trying real hard to put together a Billy Idol tribute. I went to watch them all in action and they were all very good, but i just couldn't do it. I can't see myself playing music from one artist for too long before I'd get bored with it. The money on offer was great but my current band is more diverse.

That my friend is the only drawback, I haven't put a Zeppelin album on in 10 years just for the listening pleasure, It's alway's to go over something or to learn something new. I'm ruined for life at just throwing a Zep disc on other than Pesence for listening pleasure. In-fact, I usually change the radio station if any Zep comes on. Don't get me wrong I love Zeppelin but I have played there music longer than they have, I bet that we play songs that they have never played live! lol.
This is why I have my original outlet. I get paid to play in one band and I pay to play in another. It all balances out.

Amazing really because two of my LEAST favourite bands are R.E.M and U2.

It does get a little "old" when musicians who play "self penned" stuff look down their noses at us. I hesitate to use the word "originals" as, in 99% of cases, it would be inaccurate IMHO

I totally agree that a musician is a musician, regardless of what material he/she plays.

Personally, I got involved in the tribute market primarily so that I could play music and earn money from doing it. I have been in situations (see above!!) where I've been playing stuff that I actively disliked, purely for the money. If that makes me a musical whore, so be it - I would suggest, though, that the vast majority of "sessions" players are, effectively, doing exactly the same thing.

The trick, I suppose, is to get yourself into a situation where you can play music you love (self penned or otherwise) on a regular, well paid basis. 36 years into my playing career, I'm still working on that one.

Any more tribute TBers out there?

Just an opinion: The next time there's a thread about "New music vs Old music" just point out the number of tribute bands that are happening now.

Same with reunion bands, reunion tours.

The first maybe was the GMO (Glenn Miller Orchestra) but think about it: Even in the Classical period people didn't want to hear last year's stuff (or stuff from last century's composers); they wanted brand new stuff. Up into last century, the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, there were few tribute bands and reunion bands - not like it is today.

Except for all the Elvises of course.

New music vs old - hmmmmm....

Keep going with your tribute stuff guys - you're providing a much needed service and giving people a LOT of enjoyment.
