Any trombonists on Talkbass?

I used to play years ago in school, and I was pretty good... I'm thinking about picking it up again, and I'm clueless. Being outside of the resources of an academic situation, I don't know where to get information...

Are there any trombone websites like TalkBass (with a forum)? I want to research trombones, teachers etc. If anyone wants to recommend a good instrument, or a teacher in the New York area, I'm all ears.

I did a search here, and the most recent thread dedicated to Trombone was like two years old (in the Misc. forum). So I figured I would start a new thread and hopefully eavesdrop on some trombone talk.

Trombone is by far my favorite wind instrument. I love Salsa bands with just trombones in the winds section and I'm a big Christian Lindberg fan. BTW, I can proudly say that I was the one who introduced him to trombonists in my town (including a friend from Ukraine).

Not my main instrument (I am a Tuba guy) but I played a lotta jazz in HS and college... But then, I was the BASS TROMBONE, Baby! My favorite time to play a jazz concert was right after playing a concert band concert... cause the tuba really loosened the Bass Bone chops up...

I have a cheap trombone, I play on occasion, but I would hardly call myself a 'boner.

Bump!

Hey, I think I'm finally ready to buy another trombone. I need something affordable but decent quality. I recall a website where the author had a comprehensive overview of various brands and models, and what models were good/not-so-good/sleeper buys and so on. But now I can't seem to track that website down. Anybody know what I'm talking about? All the commonly-seen brands were on one page, with brief descriptions of the various models (from student grade to pro). The reviews were brief but covered a lot of territory.

I seem to recall that this website said that Yamaha made some low priced instruments that were really good for the price (for example). But I can't seem to track down that website. Anybody know what I'm talking about? I probably learned about it on TalkBass in the first place.

Beeper? What is this...1993? You need to update that joke Do you know the difference between a trombonist and a fried chicken?

A fried chicken can feed a family of four

But seriously, I played bone all through school, then I got to college and realized I sucked at jazz trombone. I picked up bass and here I am. I don't remember much but have you tried:

probably google will yield some stuff......check out gone with the wind .......jj johnson on youtube....with mr pc himself on bass......

i wonder if there would be any work for a memphis horn/brass kind of outfit...sort of a hired gun thing in your area.....have charts will travel

i wish there were more bands with horns,or even keys.....i understand the economics of it all,but ....i get so tired of the three man strat'n'hat stuff

if,say,a chicago blues type outfit could call up a horn section for selected gigs, and that same horn crew was able to do gigs with other styles on short notice and minimal rehearsal time.......

The Jazz Corner website has a section for Trombonists and a big bonus is that Robin Eubanks also has a forum there - he is a great Trombone player and regular forum poster!

I am also a trombonist (tromboner, har har), and played it before I took up bass, though it's my secondary instrument now. I play it for much the same reasons as I play bass: to be really obnoxious and make farting noises loudly.

Just get a cheap one. It will do fine. One of the finest musicians I know is a "boner" and he plays the same King beginner model he started with in school.....30 years ago. Another thing you should check out is practicing the bass using trombone music. I do it all the time and it really gets me "out of the box" with both my reading and fingering. My favorite books are Arban's and Rubank series. Good luck!
