Trumpet with effects pedals

Sign in to disble this ad
The objective of this thread is simple, but possibly quite difficult: suggest to me some trumpet players who use effects pedals.

I know that Flea plays trumpet with a wah, but my ears did not like it, not one little bit! Anyone know any better players? Please?

This thread is in conjunction with my other thread, as they are of similar topics:

Trumpet rock

big +1 on Nils.
And my old bandmate Jonathan Powell, too, who now lives in NYC. His band, Nu Sangha, recently played a CD-release show at the Blue Note, and is now touring the Northeast. Check 'em out if you can - http://www.jonathanpowell.net/html/news.php

Jonathan also played on my old band's CD - www.groovewell.com

Just found his record Transcend on Spotify, so far it's real fresh. Reminds me of Jaga actually!

You were quite a lot more helpful in this thread than in the trumpet rock one. Cheers!

Never heard of ANY of those people, and I'm not exactly an ignoramus when it comes to the trumpet, I study the damn thing.

Didn't Miles Davis use effects pedals on occasion, or even studio effects like delay on Bitches' Brew?

Miles Davis played his trumpet through a wah-wah pedal - I've also seen Randy Brecker using effects.

I have seen the British trumpeter Chris Batchelor using electronics and have attended sessions where he has talked about this before playing!

re: Miles - yes, but I couldn't tell you which pedals he used when...

I'm probably biased, but ... IMO, Jonathan is a huge talent, on the brink of really taking off. He's still in his early/mid '20s.

Randy Brecker, now THERE'S someone I know about. Don't really have many recordings by him though, I'll be sure to check him out!

If anyone knows about any trumpeters taking advantage of studio effects, that would be great too.

See you guys in about nine hours, I'm snoozing now.

I'm a trumpet player (toured the US as trumpet player) And a bass player, at present bass mostly... but I have an evolving effects board for trumpet...have been electric since 1977. (Back then it was King pickup into King octave box preamp into EH DrQ. into Clone Theory into DOD plug-in stereo analog delay.)

The site http://www.trumpetherald.com/ has lots of electric trumpet threads in the "other toys" section.

Lately, Chong Vu has the best effects set up I've seen. GREAT band! Great bass player in his band! Like I used to have, he uses a 90s Digitech PDS8000 for loops...he searched the web for one... Eric Trufaz is good. Nicholas Payton is a trumpet monster, his electric albums have Great effects. "Sonic Trance" a fantastic electric album.
Roy Hargrove uses effects in his electric bands. Graham Haynes (Roy's son) plays electric cornet.
Oh yeah, Randy Breaker...in "The 11th House: in the 70s... Mutron III's introduction!

Jon Hassle is the Master of electric trumpet. Sometimes Nils Petr Molvaer gets his breathy sound, but nobody sounds more vocal on electric trumpet than Jon Hassle. His "Fascinoma" is one of the best recordings ever... although acoustic unlike his other work. He's on talking heads "Remain In Light", did a lot of the work on "My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts" and then was screwed by Mr Psycho Killer on the credits. He did 2 great albums with Eno in the 80s. He did the theme music for the TV show, "Homicide: Life On The Streets."

I saw Miles in 74 and 75 and his wah wah was customized for trumpet. He used the King mouthpiece pickup (we all used back then)...(it was Pete Cosey who blew me away though). Low fidelity contact pickup, but he used the dull overdriven sound with his chops to make something Very expressive. "Agharta", and "On The Corner" are must own albums for this sound. "Live Evil" too...

Don't get me started about "On The Corner", the most important album of the 70s that all the critics hated.

Don Ellis was the first I saw using trumpet with effects in the 60s.

Miles would also run the trumpet through the Space Echo, though that was more of studio effect.

Is this effect still widely available, and if not what other kind of effects could produce similar results?

Excellent post BassBrass! Judging by your user name, it looks like you've been waiting for question such as this one. I shall respond to everything you just said.

I didn't know about that website first of all, so thanks for that, I'll Bookmark it.

When I Google Chong Vu, I'm ironically enough led to other forums recommending his music, but I can find no pages with his music... care to send me a link?

Yes, I've heard some Nicolas Payton and Roy Hargrove, they are both very good aren't they?

There's some trumpet on a Talking Heads album? Excellent, this helps my trumpet rock thread! Unfortunately, it's one of the three Talking heads albums I don't own, but I shall obtain a copy soon!

All the critics hated On The Corner? I've only heard two songs from that album (compilations) but what I heard was fantastic...

Anyways, thanks for your time!

I saw Randy Brecker play through some effects pedals when he was in Jaco's Word of Mouth touring band back in 1982.

+1. Jon Hassell (that's the correct spelling ) makes some truly amazing sounds with the trumpet. Just look up 'Shadow' from Eno's Ambient IV album on Grooveshark and you'll see what we mean. He also made two records with Eno as BassBrass mentions: Fourth World, Vol I and II.

"electric" trumpet

Don Ellis used a ring modulator (I think it was made for him by Tom Oberheim) and Echoplex (a tape based echo unit) when I played with him in the early 70's . . .

EDIT you can hear how he used the effects on "At Fillmore" and "Tears of Joy", both recently re-issued as Wounded Bird CDs . . .

You played with him? What's your name, and what was the lineup. Can I hear your playing on the recordings you just gave?

Yup, all though it's pretty expensive. Any one of a number of digital or analog delays would achieve the same effect.

Dennis Parker . . . I played with the Don Ellis Orchestra from 1970 to early 1972, when I moved to San Francisco to play with the Mike Nock Group (with drummer Eddie Marshall and guitarist Bill Connors) . . . I played on "At Fillmore", "Tears of Joy" and "The French Connection" film score . . . check out my profile . . . . . .

EDIT: Bill Connors joined Chick Corea's group "Return to Forever" in 1973, but only stayed for a short while . . . he quit RTF in 1974 to concentrate on acoustic guitar, recording for the ECM label . . .

Trumpet with effects pedals...That's an idea that we haven't thought of at Source Audio. We posted a video a while back of a flute with our Hot Hand Wah, I bet that would work really well on the Trumpet with a Phaser/Flanger.

The video of the flute with hot hand can be viewed here
