Nice technique. I wonder if the kid knows what notes he's playing or even what key he's in...

They're right! I really don't hear either one "holding a groove" at all. I hear some nice playing and some real nice, cleanly played technique, but honestly, no groove. Bippity bippity and rudimentary drumming. No real groove.

True, I just saw it as a cheap shot. Why generalize like that? His age? the fact that its a Wooten Song?

I would hate listening to music if that's the first thing I thought when I heard good technique.

Awesome. Those kids are well on their way to being true badasses.

On a side note, I picked up one of those Cort Curbows at GC yesterday...that thing was TINY! It doesn't help that I'm 6' 260lbs, but I don't think I could really play a bass that small!

I guess since I'm not being asked directly, I'll just answer:

It's great that he has the facility to use that slap technique but how far does that go? What's more interesting? Just slapping along to something or slapping along AND knowing why the notes you are playing have been chosen by the composer.

but why do you assume he doesn't understand what he's playing?

...Or maybe the fact that a 15 year can play better than he can?

Where did you even read that?

"I wonder..." is my exact post. Not, "I bet he doesn't know what he's doing" - that would be implying I assume he doesn't know what he's doing. Reading comprehension, it's a wonderful thing.

OK, why do you "wonder if the kid knows what notes he's playing or even what key he's in..."?

I think Disco Gee has the right idea.
