retro is fantastic, but pseudo-retro can be a serious miss (although sometimes really good but not in this case). Look at this pseudo-retro job. the neck looks pretty good, but the body is pathetic. way to fail.http://cgi.ebay.com/Fender-Squire-Te...3%3A1|294%3A50

One of the worst relics I have ever seen.

I will do a better job for free. Give me a pack of smokes and a screwdriver!

Aren't Relics supposed to look like they've been played for years? That one looks like he cheated on his girlfriend and she keyed his bass. Sheesh!

(Edit: ^ Beat me to it)

Geez, thats one of the worst I've ever seen.
Reliced only because it was left in a locked room with a cat that hadn't been fed in 3 days and no access to a litterbox!!
That's the only explanation I can think of for the multiple long scratches.
And whats with the cig burn in front of the decal? Is there any way a cig can be held there? Disclaimer: I'm not a smoker.

The only way i can think of is if the strings hadn't been snipped off and the guy in question had held his cigarette on the tip of his string, then it hung over the headstock and burned it.

But, it is an absolute mess! What the hell was this guy thinking and what delusion does he live in if he thinks THAT looks like a vintage and distressed guitar?

Prepare for this thread to be locked down.....I found an even worse "relic'ing" job (or, more appropriately, a trashing job) on a bass a few weeks ago.

I don't think we can talk about how bad somebody else's bass looks here.

But yeah, this one makes you wonder if the guy has ever even looked at a play worn bass.

I think we're in the clear. It's a guitar.

Which does explain a few things.

Gives a new meaning to the term "guitard", huh?

And to be honest, I got so involved in looking at the random gouging I never even noticed the skinny strings. I need to be vanquished to the corner....

just put the plastic parts in a smoke eater for a month. and use fine wet snad paper and light rub were the wear would normally go.

big deal.

Like ko stradivarius said, what is the deal with the cigarette marks?

Seriously, didnt he ever stop to wonder how a person might have burns in those areas when he was choosing the places to burn?

Relicing a Squier?

Fenders get played, "loved", night after night by talented musicians.

Squiers get beaten to death by kids in their punk bands until they pawn them off for drug money.

can you even properly relic a guitar (through years of actual use) with a poly finish anyway? i mean, beyond stripping the finish itself.

said it before...my hands don't sweat (they actually dry out fast more than anything), so me getting a maple neck nice and grimy just ain't gonna happen.

Hmmm...didn't realize that aging an instrument involved the use of screwdrivers and markers. I'll go way out on a limb and predict that this won't sell.

Relics / Distressed basses

this is just me, but I can't really understand why anyone pays extra for someone to take the time to make a nice brand new bass look like an old bass?
I'd love to have a worn old bass....but only if the wear marks and the long loving relationship with the instrument were mine as well!
Otherwise, give me a nice shiny NEW instrument that looks new.
