Ultimate 80's Pop Guitar?

Sign in to disble this ad
Other than the versatile Fenders, what would you consider to be some of the quintessential electric guitars used in the 80's for pop/rock? I'm looking to start a project that delves into the great melodic pop/rock of the very early- to mid-80's (maybe late 70's, too).

I'll probably be handling the bass duties myself, as I have been playing this style more or less in all of my bands since 1982. But, I want to also stretch out into handling at least some of the guitar myself as well.

I know that several artists from that era really favoured guitars like the Yamaha SG2000. Any others come to mind?

When talking about this era, I usually think of Les Pauls and Dean guitars. There were also early Jackson/Charvel(although those were introduced in 1984, IIRC) and maybe Kramer Pacers and Barettas.

True. Some of that scene makes me think of the classic "pointy headstock" era. I guess I'm aiming more for the not-quite-as-big-haired New Wave/New Romantic era type of guitars. The type of guitars that lended some ear-catching melodic lines to a thick foundation of synths.

Those Kramers and Jacksons were great, though.

I dunno, a Strat is the obvious answer. Stick a little bit of flange and chorus on and you're good to go!

A lot of that music was played with either Strats or Les Pauls (just like everything from the 50's until nowwith the exception of 60's British music(Rickenbacker))with a few notable exceptions.
