Underage playing at 21+ show?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys, My bands just starting to get into heavy gigging, and i'm setting up a show at a twenty one plus venue. We are all 15-19. Is there any protocol that needs to be followed, or paperwork thats needs to be filed with the state? we are out of New Hampshire.

1. Make sure the venue knows you guys are under 21 prior to the show. If they don't, you may not be allowed to enter or play. Better to find out up front.
2. I suggest taking a dad with you, and have him assure the manager that you have played 21+ clubs before, and that you all know what is expected and how to behave. He would probably be the best person to call the club, and let them know he is your manager (even if he's not.) This will help set them at ease.
3. Everyone must be mature. If anyone tries to sneak a drink or behave in any way other than professional, don't count on being hired to play 21+ establishments.
4. If the venue allows you to play, have fun!

As far as the legal ins and outs of what you want to do, it's going to be highly dependent on location. Here in Texas there are specific rules covering that sort of thing, and it behooves you to get to know the legalities involved. The management of the venues you are considering playing would be a good place to start, and if your state has an alcohol control board of some sort, I'd check with them as well. You'll want to find out what's what long before the day of the gig.

I'll reinforce what the other poster said - if you can arrange to do this, you guys are ALL going to have to be on your BEST behavior. No matter how safe it appears, you'll be under a microscope the whole time. The venue has a lot to lose if they are caught in an underage drinking situation - one slipup could cost them their license - so if you are tempted to sneak a drink, DON"T.

Since you are all underage, i mean this in the best possible way-good luck.

When I was underage doing sideman stuff in bands that were 21+, it was highly venue dependent. The venue determined everything.

It went from being no big deal, they put a mark on my hand showing that I'm underage/can't have alcohol and everything else was fine. One venue, they wouldn't let me play (the guy found that out in advance), another venue-I could play, setup, and teardown, but not hang out. That sucked considering the other guys in the band were my ride. The most relaxed places were the ones that carded the hardest at the bar-they didn't have any special rules for me or anything. Granted, I never tried to order a drink-I stuck with coke or water.

Once I turned 21, gigs became more fun. I don't drink heavily on them now, but it's nice being able to A. play anywhere, B. get a beer if i want one.
