Unexpected discoveries about what you want to play

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been playing music for nearly two decades now and have done a lot of different stuff from children's music to metal and from a Vivaldi concerto to a song where I did nothing but pluck an open string on one for the entire song. I'm 34 years old and I finally figured out that what I really wanted to do all along was commercial rap that's shamelessely white trash.

It's more fun and more rewarding than anything else I've ever done, and I've only been at it for a month. I have never felt this enthusiastic about any music ever before, not even when I was a teenager. I wish I tried this years ago, but of course all I can do now is see how far I can take this and how much my metal bands' fans will hate me for it.

Anyone else have any such unexpected and sudden revelations?

LOL, I too have considered this and come from the same style music as you. I was gonna call my self Y.T. (read whitey)...was gonna go more of a comedic route with it. Unfortunatley when trying to write beats they all come out sounding very metal and not some much rappish.

I found I really enjoy playing reggae - but are you going to see this old, non-420 friendly, white woman in a reggae band? Don't think it's gonna happen......

Do what I do - take the chord progression from a country song, speed it up so it's a good tempo to rap over, make a funky bassline for the progression, and add a really basic drum loop. That's all!

Play reggae basslines in slow pop songs? I do that in my originals band sometimes.

around 3 years ago I was surprised to realize that I really loved playing jazz rather than simple viewing it as a necessary grueling excercise.

I was in this folky, bluesy rock 3 piece that kicked ass. I wish there was more guys like the guitarist/singer that weren't alcoholics, though.

I mainly play black metal. I've found that I also enjoy playing folk music and dixieland.

Um.....it's been done before. Kid Rock pretty much hit the "white trash rap thing" out of the park. But hey, if it makes you happy, go for it! Best of luck!

Yeah, but I'm doing a white trash version of middle-class white rap (specifically crunkcore). As far as I know no one before me has been stupid enough to attempt something so pointless.
