Uni-Button Sound Bank

Alright...well I'm new here so this may be even more awkward as a first post than intended, but here goes.

Electronic drums suck. My drummer knows it, even I know it. Something far less rewarding about striking a lifeless plastic pad, much like playing bass on your laptop, or something, in an audio application - like Garageband .

I build my own drums (and bass guitars as well for that matter) for our tiny little band. What I am doing is making an acoustic drum and mic'ing it up with a Pulse Red Hot DR-1 drum trigger underneath the top batter drumhead. However, instead of running this directly into something like an amplifier or PA, I want to run it into a sound bank which would then be amplified. This would allow my drummer to upload a selection of samples onto it (or simply one) and play it like an electronic drum with an excellent acoustic look and feel.

Why not get a drum synth you ask? Well, that's the trick. I want this 'sound bank' to be small enough to house both the piezo pickup and the bank INSIDE the drum and just drill a hole for the output. That's why if the bank has only room for one sample, that would be just fine - say the sound of a person clapping for instance.

I just need help finding this god forsaken sound-making-object (for lack of a better word)...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Chris

PS - My apologies if anything like this has been brought up before or what I am looking for is completely obvious...

welcome to TB

You sure think outside of the box. Can't help aside from this bump.

You don't understand Red Hots. They are triggers not mics. You can't plug them directly into an amp or PA, they have to be connected to a drum brain (sound module w/ trigger inputs). So yes, you could purchase a Red Hot and a brain and attempt to mount them both inside the drum, but you would still have power and signal cables that need to come out of the drum.

IMO just install the Red Hots the way they were designed, with the jack hole through the shell of the drum, and then connect it to your external brain. Then you connect the brain to the PA.

Hahah my bad. At any rate though, can you think of a drum 'brain' small enough that it can be reasonably housed within a small/midsize tom?
Thanks for the help,
Chris

Most of them are smaller than a midsized tom. They'd take up a decent amount of space in there and it would be a challenge to keep it from touching either head, but it would fit. To keep things simpler you may want to use a tom with only a top head.

Impact and vibration are enemies of electronics. Are you sure you want to do that?

Yeah, everything will work just fine with a little padding. As long as it has some cushioning all should work fine. I believe I've gotten everything working using a Roland TD-6 module. A little soldering gets all working the way I need! Thanks for the help!
