Thumbs up University

Hi Y'all,

Recently I've been trying to find out information about studying Jazz at a university in USA as its been my dream since I was a kid to live/study there. (Cliche I know )

Some places seem pretty positive about letting me in judging by mp3s of my playing I sent them. However the cost of the colleges are like $22,000/£13,000. Unis in the UK are less than half this price and as I would be a foreign student I cant get help with any loans.

I don't know what to do, I could probably get a degree just as good over here in the UK, but I hate it here its dull and it rains all the time, quite unispiring for a young musician. Or I could look into the USA thing a bit more and see if I could get any loans from the UK to take over, however I will be in much more debt by the time the course finishes!

The whole thing is getting me down, like I said (corny as it may sound), its been my dream to live/study in the US and the older I get the futher away it seems.

See my boggle?! Can anybody give some advice?

Realistically? Major in something that gives you an employable skill; pursue music as a second major or as a minor. Odds are that you will need to have a more marketable skill to support yourself while you play music as an avocation.

I play with quite a few young musicians who come out here to LA to take private lessons with their musical heroes while working in order to pay for these lessons. Granted, even the jobs which were not at all competitive two years ago (such as waiting tables and etc) are hard to come by in this economy, but the actual work/study visa should not be a problem for a UK citizen. This may help you live your dream of studying music and living in the US without incurring a large amount of debt, which a career in full time music may not necessarily enable you to pay back very easily in the future.

Just my $0.02. Hope it helps.
