Question University piece, 'popular music'?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been inquiring into changing my pure psych course into psych/music as I think I would come out with a better degree in that. I have an audition which I need to play a 3-4 minute solo piece for, its a 'popular music' course so I think I should play something thats a little more modern than the classical or traditional jazz pieces that usually go down well.

I want to play a piece that shows off some impressive two handed tapping technique but only in moderation, I want to show I can hold a steady groove and play 'the bass' but also throw in a little showmanship. I'm ok with arranging my own piece but I don't want to write something for it, I only have about 3 weeks to prepare it .

Anyone got any suggestions?
Thanks.

The middle section of Metropolis Pt 1 by Dream Theater, but I don't know how it would sound for solo bass.

Wooten would have a lot of pieces that could fit the bill - You Can't Hold Now Groove would be one, Norwegian Wood another.

The first one that came to my mind was Wooten's "Amazing Grace", but I don't think that's what your looking for as far as style.

You could do your own arrangement of a 20th century style "classical" piece. Something by Bartok...or something along the lines of "Gigue" by Emma Lou Diemer...or anything else you'd like to arrange for bass.

The first thing that came to mind for me was Stu Hamm's Version of Beethoven's Piano Sonata #13 [or is it 14...] either way, it's his "Moonlight Sonata". I did a paper in music history on that piece [not the Stu Hamm version......Andre Watts and Daniel Barenboim recordings]. That'd give you a classical piece interpreted in a new way.

Otherwise-i agree with the others "Amazing Grace" would be nice.
