Unorthedox bass tricks?

Sign in to disble this ad
I didnt know what thread to put this under so i chose here.

I play in an Indie rock/Noise rock band and have learned a few things and i'm curious on a few others. These are all Noise techniques.

I've used:
Pick scratching
Harmoinc feedback
Screwdrivers
Drumstick slide

Yet to try:
Struming the strings past the nut
Bumping the guitar into my cab lightly
Delay then Distortion
Multi Distortion
Tapping my bass neck to make feedback
Shaking my bass by my amp

Has anyone else used the ones i've used and can anyone tell me if the ones i haven;t used would work or what sound to expect?

You can always prepare your bass.
I think you'd like it, OP.

Just put paper clips, magnets, and whatever on your strings. Changes the sound.

Try it, though. You might like it. It's fun.

Wait...WAIT.....there are tricks involved now? How did I miss this memo, being in the game 26 years now?

And here I was concerning myself with good tone & proper technique(s) and personalization in my style....where's my deck of cards?

rest a TV remote on the strings over the picks and try to change the channel--most remotes give a chopped tremolo beeping sound...pretty cool. Also cool to do that all while using a delay

If you have hot pickups you can use some tv/cable box remote controls. Just hold the control close to the pickups and hold down the volume or channel buttons. You can get some beeps and bloops this way.

For a different way to bend notes, especially open notes, you can push forward or ull back on your head with your fret hand while anchoring the body with you strike hand.

Play behind your head with your tongue.

Use a dime or quarter as a pick, for scratchy but still useful note playing.

This one is hard unless you get some nifty gloves of special ice, it can also damage your gear. Use an ice cube to fret your notes. At first there isn't much difference, other than being hard to hold a note, but as the ice melts around the strings you get different sustains rattles and buzzes off the notes.

Cut the power cables for your pedals up then re-sauder them back together.

Also, have your guitarist call your cell, and then hold your cell up to your pickups...could even have him sing a verse that way.

My epi T-bird was made in China. It has no soul. This treatment is nothing.

Yet to try:

- Chop up bass with hatchet while connected
- Set bass on fire
- Drive Jeep across bass
- Beat guitarist insensible with bass
- Drill holes in bass with 3/4" wood bit
- Fire fully automatic weapons at bass (dodge cops immediately afterward)

Let us know how they work, 'kay?
