Unsung R&B Documentaries

Sign in to disble this ad
Unsung is an hour-long music documentary program. I stumbled upon these today (if posted before, sorry...I totally missed out!).

Couple of my favourite R&B bands from the day...

Heatwave
Wow. Tragedy X 3...still, hearing & seeing these guys in their heyday should bring a smile to your face (if you're a fan).

Rose Royce
Bassist "Duke" Jobe has an inetersting sub-story throughout this tale. Approx. 6 minutes in...you will see him thumping (present day) on a sunburst MM Sting Ray. He is using a Fender P on much of the '70s stuff (eventually going to an Alembic). He's cool now & attempting a comebcak...but almost went the way of Jaco & others.

It airs on TV One in the states. other interesting episodes for bassist would be The Ohio Players since most episodes focused on singers. And The Sylvers showing how Leon went from big brother, but much more then Jackie Jackson to the hottest producer of SOLAR.

I just learned about the Sylvers the other day and was instantly hooked on their earlier stuff (it's a shame they didn't get as big as the Jackson 5 though)

My father was the Junior High science teacher for the older kids. I had to call him up when I saw the episode airing. The Shalamar episode was also of special interest since Jody Watley was two years ahead of me at high school. She was down to earth even though she was already THE featured dancer on Soul Train.

We do not get that Channel as part of the "Basic" cable package...no surprise there.
I do plan on watching the episodes with The Ohio Players & The Sylvers.
I checked out a bit of the Billy Preston doc...George Johnson (Brothers Johnson) can be seen playing guitar (I did not see Louis).
