URGENT!! Flight case for 2 Jazz Basses - Help!!

Sign in to disble this ad
I have to carry 2 basses to India, from Texas, and I plan to do so in the next 2-3 weeks. I saw a double bass hard case in fender's website a long time ago, but it's not there anymore. Can anyone help out? I just need a case decent enough to survive one trip, I will be giving the basses to someone. So I just need something reliable to survive a one-way trip that won't be too hard on the pocket. Also, the 2 basses are a Squier Fretless and a Fender Marcus Miller Jazz.

Need help ASAP. Thanks.

I wonder if the big multiple shotgun case at WalMart or Turners would suffice?

You also got the Federal tax fee forms and replacement values/receipts and paperwork for those basses - right?

I have a friend who travels internationally all the time and he has had to report unused, unopened soap bars in some countries.

You will prolly be charged a big fee for taking them and leaving them there. You may also have to register as a licensed importer if you try it any other way.

They absolutley will run an 'Inventory IN/Inventory OUT' manifesto on you and you can get seriously screwed!

US Customs works with foreign gummermints to make sure that you don't leave anything of value in a foreign country without the appropriate taxes, excise-duty fees paid.

Don't try to steal from the US G'vt - they hate competition.

Why not properly box them and ship them via FedEx or UPS if you have that much time, gotta be cheaper than a case and you can insure the items.

@bassbrad:
I could, but then the paying Customs duty once they're shipped to India would screw me up, and would amount to way more than i can afford. The whole purpose of buying them for great bargain prices here would go down the drain.

You're gonna pay Duty either way - and one way comes with the penalty of trying to fool the gvt. If they catch you, you could be in serious problems.

There was a guy ---------

--------who tried this little trick between Canada and the US. They caught him and now he has a pix on the Customs office walls in both countries plus the fines and whatever jail time.

You have to pay a duty on a gift or donation? Can't you just say you're going to play them?

You can bring them back or pay the duty.

Simple.

And don't try the 'I lost them' ploy either.

just build a box .....cardboard is free, bubble and styro insulation is cheap, and figure out if it's cheaper as checked baggage, fedex,or buying a seat for them.....fedex will definitely involve import duties and taxes if applicable, but i wouldn't worry too much about leaving them there.....us authorities are not the ones that will be concerned about that

maybe none.....depends how diligent indian authorities are.....check on line,i'm sure there is a web page, call fedex and get a quote, usps has info....us authorities have no control what you leave elsewhere, and any info you leave with them would be for the purposes of bringing the basses back to the us with proof of origin so the us customs don't assess duty or tax....

BTW - check with the airline. Many allow you to carry on guitars. You get a tag to check them at the gate and they go in special storage for wheelchairs, baby carriers, etc.
