Using JPJ for tone help

To all you Led Zeppelin fans out there, im having trouble with the words that are used to describe sounds. So, heres the comparison:

John Paul Jones' sound on good times bad times (the solos) versus his sound on their presence album (Achilles last stand, Nobody's fault but mine, etc). Two very different sounds, both great. What i want to know is how would you describe those sounds, and how would i go about EQing to get them (i know, i need his fingers and gear to get his sound, im just looking for a ballpark). Zep fans unite!

PM Funkster, he played in a Zep tribute band for 15 years
and is the master of all things JPJ, Fender Jazz and so forth.

Prescence was recorded with the Alembic 8 string, even a radical eq won't give you that sound.

I think he also used rounds and/or with a pick in addition to the flats on the jazz.

His later cds were played with Alembics, with active electronics, steel strings, and often 8 strings. Earlier cds were P or J, depending on the song (Immigrant Song and Black Dog were P, for example). Much bassier tone. JPJ can make anything sound good, however.
