Van Halen is one of 5 artists who have been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this year. The induction ceremony oughta be an interesting soap opera, especially since they usually ask the inductees to perform live. I wonder whether Eddie will let Diamond Dave OR Sammy OR Michael Anthony onstage with him?!

It will be interesting to see how it plays out. Both Sammy and David are listed as inductees along with Eddie and Alex VH and Michael Anthony. http://www.rockhall.com/museum/releases.asp?id=2544

At least I admit that he's good, instead of the classic "Van Halen Sucks!@!1"
Though I will say that I absoluteley can't stand David's voice, I'm sorry
Though, I'd say that they, at least Eddie, deserve it.

I remember riding my bike to the "record" store to get Van Halen II, what a great album that was. As a group Van Halen was unstoppable in the late 70's early 80's then the problems started. I went to the same High School as Micheal Soboleski (Anthony) boy that was fun. I just realized I am old. |

Just like the Grammys... everyone knows that the Police were cooler than Rush, so of course Behind My Camel should get the Grammy instead of YYZ. |

I totally agree, Rush needs to be in there. So does Yes, for that matter. And the Guess Who.

And then Billy Sheehan and Steve Vai will show up and do a solo set with DLR. |

And there is a much larger number of people and musicians that weren't deeply into REM who still were heavily influenced by them. In the late 80s and early 90s, REM was HUGE in alt rock.

In the late 80s and early 90s, REM was HUGE in alt rock. | I remember a reading story about a bass player in the 80's telling his bandmates about one of his favorite bands, an unknown band from Athens, Georgia.
The band was REM. The bassist was Cliff Burton.
You'd better believe REM was influential, whether you like them or not. I don't love them, but I do like them - and respect them.
*Disclaimer: No, I can't back that story up with a source... maybe someone else heard this too? |

In it, he mentions listening to the latest REM album while on the Metallica tour. |

He wanted to test out Eddie's rig and couldn't figure out why it didn't sound killer like Eddie. All Eddie really used in the pre-Hagar days was an old Marshall Plexi and a solid state Echoplex. He had an MXR phase 90 (phase shifter), an MXR flanger, and a little 7 band EQ, but didn't use these effects most of the time. His rig looked so bad, home-made, duct taped, beat up. A real musician kicking ass live and the tone was 99% in his fingers. I realize the band's songs can be lame, and surely bands like Rush and Yes are deserving, but nobody took the guitar to the next level like Eddie did.

I put Eddie right up there with Jimi for influencing guitar players.

Too bad MA didn't do the singing duties. He was the best singer they ever had! |
