Thumbs down Venting My YYZ Related Frustration...

Sign in to disble this ad
I decided that today I would learn YYZ, a song I've always wanted to be able to play. So after a (long) while, I've figured out all the parts, except for the second little bass solo, which I can't seem to get.

Anyway, I decide that I have it good enough to record it onto my little cassette player (ommiting of course the second solo). This is where the frustration comes in: I've recorded it about ten times, and I simply cannot nail it. It seems that whenever I get going well, I lose my focus and screw up. It's all very frustrating, so I just had to vent.

Has anyone had a similar frustrating bass playing experience?

Gahh!

It's a very difficult song. I took a stab at it, but could never get a clean tone, so gave up. I'll revisit it in a while, when my technique is cleaner.

And here I was thinking that you were going to start bitching about Lester Pearson International...

It's a tricky one. I tried learning it once years ago and gave up in frustration after a few hours. I'm not sure if it's possible to play it without the Geddy Nail(tm).

you have just learned oneof the most important lessons in music: playing in studio or somewhere where a song is being recorded is immensely difficult. i learned this when i was experimenting with recording myself, its a really hard skill to play something perfectly in a studio situation of some sort.

my teacher alwasys tells how his technique was cleaned right up when he first stepped into a studio, because the second someone makes a mistake, then the whole take has to be started again.

That's exactly the same part that took me the most time to nail. Here's my transcription from the "Exit... Stage Left" version:

I love to play that tune, BTW.

i never stop a take for a mistake. that is foolish. you never know what it will turn into. sometimes i'll keep it if the mistake is not too bad and the feel is great. sometimes it sucks and i do re-track it. you just never know. if your tracking jingles on the other hand, it should be dead on. no creativity allowed there peace, jeff
