As for electronic music not having soul, John Cage said it best that no sound, note or music has any intrinsic 'meaning'. It's only through time and repeated examination that we are able to attach 'meaning', 'soul' or emotion to a kind of music. Many of Beethoven's comtempories felt his music was crass and crude. A lot of early R+R was heard as 'just noise', now it's classic rock.
Electronic music is young, in the history of music. Some of the work done is not well thought out and will be ignored as time goes on. Some electronic music will be classic some day.

There are stereotypes that get made about many different genres of music by people who are ignorant about it. Sure, there are examples that reinforce the stereotype, but there is far more that doesn't fit the mold if you're willing to look a little deeper. I find some electronic music to be mind-numbing and hard to listen to. I also find some electronic music to be thoroughly fascinating. There are textures and sounds that aren't available with acoustic-based instruments. Fabricating those sounds and combining them into emotionally-moving music IS the talent. |

Takes talent to make any type of music sound good (to the people who like that style) but I find electronic music to be utterly soulless. The sound somebody makes when falling down the stairs has as much soul to it as any electronic music track.
It takes talent to juggle but I wouldn't call a juggler an artist.
To recapitulate ;
- These people aren't musicians.
- What they do takes talent, although I'm not attracted to honing those skills myself.
- The "music" that's produced is soulless. |
