Sign in to disble this ad
Im not sure if this is the right section to post this, but looking for videos/recommendations of bands that have a very strong visual aspect that is incorperated into their sound , be it light show or theatrics or what ever

Please.

Jeans and T-shirts worked for Metallica pretty well. I don't see any reason to add anything else, that's just all fluff and it distracts people from your music, which is why they're supposed to be coming in the first place. When people buy your cd there's no stage show.

Maybe you could hire some strippers to dance while you play?

I think it depends on the music, it doesnt have to detract or distract . Nor am I asking for an argument , I'm merely asking representations of. Wether they are good or not is not the question

We have two female singers. That helps.

Kiss, Marilyn Manson and Rammstein are good examples of flashy, but then you could go to the other side that focuses more on lights and imagery, too: Tool and The Mars Volta at the top of my head.

Some years ago, we played a farewell/carnival gig. We had four different people including me singing and we all dressed up. I was dressed up as a mummy the guitar player was dressed as voodoo doctor(kind of like a guy in the voodoo people video from the prodigy) and the drummer wore overalls and a gas mask essentially becoming a post-apcalyptic redneck. One singer was dressed up as leatherface, the other guy was dressed up as dracula and the female singer was dressed up as a nurse.

It was really, really, really fun and I did some firebreathing in a song and the music didn't suffer at all from the show. Needless to say the guy responsible for the gig/stage was very impressed but he was really happy this was a farewell thing because he wouldn't let us play again, mostly because of the firebreathing.

The funny thing is that there was a lot of people in the audience that knew us but didn't recognize us. In fact even the people that knew it was us didn't know anything about what we were going to do, so they were really surprised and excited to see something different. Needless to say it was a blast for us as well. I wish we would have done a couple more gigs like this. I haven't done any firebreathing since that. I should totally get back to that...

Just skip over all the posers already mentioned, go right to a stage show.

Gwar-Womb With A View - YouTube

or a little more subdued and mainstream:

Alice Cooper - Under My Wheels 1971 - YouTube

Tenacious D had a great theatrical element, although you couldn't get away with it if comedy wasn't an element to your band. To date, it's the only concert I've been to where I saw Spider-Man having his way with Sasquatch on stage....

I have to admit I did like it when the giant Eddie came out on stage when I saw Maiden. But costumes and stuff... no... it just ruins it for me.

I donīt think that a good stage show detracts from the music...for the majority of paying guests...the better it looks = the better it sounds.

Rammstein live shows are awesome. The special effects are a huge part of the performance and they're used to put emphasis on certain parts of the songs. Some songs when one or more of the 7 members don't play much are like theater.

I grew up in the 70s and Funk was the pop music of my community. From Sly to the Mothership to Earth Wind and Fire's Egyptian set designs they all had something. Wearing jeans and tee shirts and standing next to a mic stand only cut it for kids working their way up.

here's an example of a band incorporating some-small scale visual elements very effectively to add to the show experience. the sound and video quality don't quite do it justice, unfortunately, but this was really one of the coolest shows i've seen at this venue. EDIT FOR BETTER VIDEO LINK: d. biddle's dia de los muertos 2007

i think the next year, they hung white sheets around the back an sides of the stage and set up work lights behind them. the band wore all black, and when those lights came on it was a really cool effect.

also, the flaming lips. holy crap.
