Visualising the mix.....

The Art of Mixing.

This is an interesting way to look at mixing, imagining the mix as a visual thing.

Personally I never got on with this approach and prefer something like Mike Stavrou's "mixing with you Mind."

The idea of visualising a mix seems to me like something that could be done after the event to explain what has happened rather than a method to build up a mix. It's a personal thing though!!

Does anyone visualise a mix as they are doing it?

You might get more responses if you ask to have this post moved to the Recording Gear and Equipment forum. That's where this kind of stuff is usually discussed.

For some reason our filters at work blocked those two pages. Don't know why. But to answer your question, I do that (visualize a mix). I've always seen it as a 3-D kind of thing - panning instruments left/right, stacking them "vertically" by frequency range, and by moving them front/back such as with the depth you can get from a little bit of reverb. I got that from people "on another forum" and I thought it made sense, to me anyway, so I've used it.

Yeah, I suck, I know that. But at least I suck a little less than I did yesterday.

It's here now.

Perhaps it will generate more of a discussion now!
