Vocal Lessons or Vocal DVD instruction?

Never had a very strong or confident voice. Need to step up the b-vox soon since we're losing a band member who had a good voice.

Has anyone tried any of the many DVDs for vocal help?

Lessons.

You need someone else to correct you when you do something wrong... Not just for correct pitch, but technique so you don't hurt your voice.

DVD will do little to help you or to correct real problems. You'll rely on your own perception of what you're doing rather than another person realistically detailing what you need to do to improve yourself.

I don't have a great voice (definitely not compared to my pre-pubescent choir boy voice days), but I like to sing everywhere which comes off as "practice". Some people I know are just born with very good voices, but most people like me could use vocal lessons in order to correct problems that we ourselves to not hear. And even for those naturally talented singers, there's lots of things they can learn to keep their voice in good condition as well as basic rudiments and singing dos and don'ts.

As others said, a DVD will only get you so far. You need someone to actually hear you and correct it from there. Many local community colleges have voice classes for a semester. Sign up for a session.
