There is, IMO, way too much slapping going on in the typical wank-fest locations, like GC,
Is there some loss in translation here? what does wank mean in american, in english it means something nasty and i dont even want to go into it |

| | | | It means masturbation, same as it does in the UK.
Since "wanking" on the bass is perceived as something being done just for one's own pleasure (because surely no one else wants to hear it), it's really no different than wanking on the, er, organ.
It's just musical masturbation. |

Again, something that almost assuredly must be done for one's own pleasure, because who the heck would wanna hear it? |

Sure musicians can lack "musical value", whatever that is. Sometimes everyone's definition can vary. I really dig Stu Hamm.....so I enjoy what most would consider "wanking". I also enjoy simple songs...some of which are on acoustic guitar and lacking of bass entirely.
I get acused of it a lot in my home town. As one of the few 5 stringers, who also plays boutique AND fretless basses, I can't to much without being labeled as a "shredder", which has the same implications. In a town of indie and Americana music styles, "there's no money above the fifth fret". So, if I do anything outside of 8th notes, I get labeled a wanker...... |

Bass players dont wank, we 'fill in' the rhythm section!! |

Wankers:Eddie Van Suckwad and the people who copy him.
Bassists:everyone who plays bass. we can use the same techniques as guitar wankers, BUT, because we are playing bass, it is not Wanking. |

Absolutely awful. | Hey, don't get me wrong, all 3 are great guitarists, Joe one of my favs, but I've seen all 3 onstage, and they carry on with just as much wanking as Angus.
To me, strutting around on stage with an air of arrogance, 'look at me, aren't I good' screams wank! Brilliance doesn't necessarily exclude you. |

Sure, you may find it fun, but NOBODY WANTS TO WATCH!
It can be applied practically anywhere. |

| | | | Wanking is great wrist exercise. And I don't think anyone goes to Guitar Center for the purpose of creating music. |

Wanking is playing with yourself. Wanking on stage means playing with yourself and not with the band (ie, soloing over everything etc).
And Jack, its not something nasty IMO. quite the opposite.

I love all 3's studio stuff, but I can only take so much soloing (and grinning and strutting). |
