a wanker is someone who plays just to hear themselves play, and hopefully impress any passersby. they frequent music stores, mostly, and occasionally stages. sometimes they actually have talent, but usually don't. they usually play way too loud and just annoy everyone.

Usually, this term is thrown around to describe a player who plays really fast wthout much concern for taste or sense. The word is sourced from a British slang term for masturbation.

These days, I'm disturbed to see the word used by number of people to sully and dismiss the work of truly accomplished players, simply because the accomplished players are able to deliver virtuoso performances.

The cynic in me awaits a single line reply to this thread that is a link to a Wooten, Caron, Marcus, or Jaco clip on YouTube. All these men are accomplished players, but heaven forbid if they play a fast run now and then......

In England, a wanker is all that and much, much more.

Someone who pretty much noodles a solo the entire length of the song and it obviously doesn't contribute to the song, just to draw attention to themselves as to say 'look at me I'm a show-off'. That's a wanker. And you can usually easily find guitar wankers at blues jams...some of those guys just don't shut up.
