Judged upon a case-by-case basis; you are now on my radar.

It really depends... because there are some basslines that would seem like wanker lines, but when you hear them with the whole band... they actually fit well and sound great!

I would say it definitely depends upon the application. In my opinion, there isn't a set rule on what overplaying is, besides playing too much for a given piece of music.

I hope that made sense!

Depends upon how much you're connected to the drum kit/drummer. Billy Sheehan is a wanker's wanker if ever there was one, but since 99% of his notes occur concurrently with something that the drummer is doing, he gets away with it.

Guilty

I'm guilty of playing wanker bass lines at times; in my last band with three guitarist. I would just play with the kick drum and snare and a lot of little cheesy fills. Got to love ego trip guitarist that's why it was my last band lol.

It's when style outweighs substance. No amount of flashy technique is any substitute for good taste.

I didn't realize you meant in a musical context, my apologies. I guess it depends on who's around. Next to an incredible wanker of a guitarist or singer, one may appear to be quite humble. Sometimes I think 'If you can't beat them, join them'.

I think I have an idea... but what is the meaning of wanker in the context of the OP?

"creative overplaying" like Jaco is "passable wankery"

This has been my opinion as well. Not that I could've summed it up so nicely though .

If you have less pocket than a pair of panties you are definitely a wanker.

Another way to say it is that it's when the playing becomes more about you than about the song.

when one of your major concerns when playing is "cutting through the mix"

Always have a reason for what you're doing.
