There are plenty of songs where the bass guitar kind of fades into the background and plays more of a supporting roll, but what about the songs where, without the bass, it would'nt be much of a song at all? Songs where the bass really drives the entire song forward?

Songs such as One of These Days by Pink Floyd, Kommienezuspadt by Tom Waits, and Belleville Rendez-Vous from the Triplets of Belleville soundtrack.

For many songs I'm sure that the emphasis on the bass part is purely subjective, but please post all the songs you know of in which the bassist really carries the rest of the band.

'Big New Prinz' by the Fall. In fact an awful lot of Fall songs depend on Steve Hanley's abrasive and really quite impressive bass riffage. From the other side of Manchester (the university side) almost every song from Joy Division/New Order circle around Peter Hook's lead bass lines. Check out the New Order 511 DVD for a demonstration of playing a semi acoustic bass at extreme volumes in concert (Singer/guitarist Barney: Should we get Hooky to turn his bass down a bit? Audience: NO!). There are also early Hawkwind albums for classic examples of Lemmy roundly abusing a Rickenbacker and drowning out almost everyone else in the process.

I'm showing my age, aren't I?

Go listen to just about anything Motown.

Also, this is definitely not the right forum for this.

Hmm... I'm not sure... Recordings? Miscellaneous?

I guess we'll try Miscellaneous. This definitely isn't a Basses thread.
