Warren Zevon and Kid Rock

It was suggested to me that I listen to a song by Kid Rock called "All Summer Long". They thought it would be a good song to do. I downloaded it and I just can't believe it. If anybody has the ability to download this song and has ever heard of Warren Zevon, I'd sure like to know your thoughts.

I saw him play it "live" on a spoof tv show once, The Larry Sanders Show or something.

Just him and a piano, and he was crazy!

Warren Zevon was always one of those underappreciated songwriters and performers. He hit it big with "Werewolves of London," but I don't think he had any other hits. The only album I have is "Exciteable Boys." His lyrics were usually dark and sardonic with tunes that weren't very commercial. There is one of his songs about a headless tommy machinegunner that I like a lot. I'm not familiar with the song you mentioned, so I'll check it out tonight.

Yeah, the lyrics of the title track are pretty dark.

Dave Letterman was a friend and fan of Warren's. I remember when Warren was diagnosed as terminal, Dave had him on the show one last time to say 'bye. Warren didn't bitch about his fate at all. He was a class act.

"Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner" A tale of betrayal and revenge set in the time Dutch/African colonialism. As only Warren could write it.

Warren Zevon was one of the most talented musicians I've ever seen perform. Most people don't realize how great a guitar player he was, in addition to the piano and songwriting.
Coincidentally, I had "Ain't That Pretty At All" going in my head this morning.

I'm glad it was on purpose at least. I've only heard the Kid Rock song once in passing and didn't notice the Sweet Home Alabama in it.

The Rock's song is still a big pile of dog #$%^ though.

I heard this "song" for the first time over the weekend, and my brother and I immediately started singing those two songs along to it. I didn't realize it was intentional... I just thought Kid Rock was an unimaginative hack.

Really? I actually quite enjoy that song. I think it's some of the better samplings done in recent history that brings new life to classic songs.

Anyone remember when Puff Daddy/P-Diddy sampled Kashmir and none of the kids knew what it was?

Kid Rock is getting away from the rap-stuff and getting bluesier every day. I'm enjoying his music quite a bit.

You're welcome to your opinion of course. I stand by my assessment.

I'd just add that the P Diddy/Kashmir mess was an abomination as well.

IMO

I enjoy the new Kid Rock song IMMENSELY more than Sweet Home Alabama. That riff used to make me cringe to the verge of nausea, but now I don't mind when the Kid Rock "version" comes on the radio at work.

The Kid Rock song makes me violently angry, I thought he had faded into obscurity. All of a sudden, he pops back onto radio with a completely half assed rip off of two songs. I could care less about Sweet Home Alabama, but Werewolves of London is a cool jam.

Basically, sampling only bothers me when it is not at all cleverly disguised/altered or a song I love. I use to, ehhh, kind of like Kanye West. But he sampled "Sing Swan Song" an amazing song by the band Can for the absolutely moronic "Drunk and Hot Girls." I guess I'm finally getting to the point where sampling bothers me.

I love Warren Zevon's material. He's a great songwriter, and wrote songs like Carmelita, Poor Poor Pitiful Me, Mohamed's Radio etc.... some tunes that were covered by Linda Ronstadt and later Dwight Yoakum etc.

I've always wanted to put a band together that would do Warren Zevon songs but where I am few people know the material. BTW, Lee Ho Fook in London actually has some Warren Zevon material on their walls as a kind of reverse acknowledgement. Crap restaurant for food though.

I heard that song for the first time less than two hours ago. It's really funny that you put up a thread about it just in time for me to see it after hearing the song.

I liked the Sweet Home lick coming up in the song, because it always happens after he sings about singing along with 'Sweet Home Alabama all summer long' and then plays the lick. That's how a sample ought to work.

The Zevon one, however, that's just theft.

After reading everyone's posts, it appears that he did this intentionally (?). I've never seen that done before. The part where he does the guitar riff for "Sweet Home", yeah that's something I'm used to. I remember a really old song called "Don't call us, we'll call you" and they do the little "I feel fine" riff and say something about "John, Paul, and George" - that was cool to me. I suppose if Kid Rock had permission to do this with the Warren Zevon song and was somehow paying tribute to it...it's still something I don't quite get.
